Untitled chapter

Scene 1

The scene opens in a dim room. There is a desk and a wardrobe. The walls are blank. There is a mess on her floor, scattered protein bar and junk food wrappers about. The scene begins with Charlie, a young university student entering the room from house doors, slamming them closed on the way in. She paces the room trying to calm down. Charlie picks up the phone and calls a friend.

Charlie

Hey Allie, What’s up? What do you mean who is this? Oh… well it’s Charlie. How was the – oh… really? Isn’t it late? Well I guess. (Picking up bottle of wine) (Hesitantly, false enthusiasm) Yeah, of course. Okay well I’ll talk to you later? What? No I’m fine, don’t worry. Yeah, of course, go have fun. Okay… yeah, you too. Bye.

She sighs, tossing the phone onto the bed. AD enters from offstage, wearing similar clothing only in grey, stays silent and still.

Charlie

Why did I call. Fuck.

Looking around the room. AD exits.

Emma

Hey! How are you doing?

Charlie

Alright I guess.

Emma

Are you coming out tonight?

Charlie

No, I don’t think so.

Emma

You’ve got to come out. Here, lets pick something out.

Charlie

No, I’m not feeling it. I’m pretty tired. Go on without me though!

Emma

Oh come on, let’s go dancing!

Charlie

No, I’m fine, I need to do some readings anyway.

emma

That’s not an excuse, here, this dress will be perfect!

charlie

That? No, it doesn’t fit

Emma

At least try it!

Charlie

Ok, fine. [Changes into dress, it fits tightly] See. Doesn’t fit

emma

It does so! It looks great on you.

Charlie rolls her eyes as Emma begins cleaning the garbage.

Emma

Here, let me help you clean this place up a bit!

charlie

Oh, sorry about that! Don’t worry about it, I’ll get it later!

Emma

I don’t mind. Is this all you’ve been eating? You need to take better care of yourself! You can’t live off of this junk.

Charlie

Pretty much… look, you should really go out, have some fun.

Emma

No, I can’t just leave you here all on your own.

charlie

No, it’s fine, really.

emma

Really? You’ve locked yourself in here for days, it’s time you get some fresh air.

charlie

It’s Fine, you go on now.

emma

Okay. Well, text me if you need anything. Okay?

Charlie

Alright, thanks.

Emma

Your welcome, see you tomorrow.

Emma leaves. Charlie lets out another sigh, a minute passes,

Charlie returns to bed turning most lights off. AD enters from the opposite side of the door. After a few moments AD joins Charlie in bed, and spoons her. Charlie, uncomfortable, begins tossing and turning trying to keep AD off of her.

charlie

Can’t you just let me sleep?

Ad

What, I’m not keeping you up am I?

charlie

Yes. You are. Get out.

ad

I’m alright. Thanks though.

AD slides a little to the edge of the bed, and watches Charlie as she begins to sleep. Shortly after, Emma enters from a night out, trying her best to stay quiet. Emma can add improvised lines as she changes from clubbing clothes into pajamas and enters/leaves the room to brush teeth, etc. During this scene Charlie eventually wakes up.

charlie

Emma, can you quiet down some? I’m trying to sleep.

emma

Oh shit! I didn’t wake you, did I?

charlie

Nobody could’ve possibly slept through this, you’re like a bull in a china shop.

emma

Oh, Charlie, I’m sorry. You aren’t mad at me, are you?

Charlie

No, just be more quiet, okay?

emma

Okay. I’m sorry I’m so loud, and that I never spend time with you. I’m such a bad roommate.

charlie

It’s okay Emma, you’re not a bad roommate, please just let me sleep.

emma

Wait, do you not want to spend time with me? Do you hate me?

charlie

No I don’t hate you.

emma

Are you sure? It sounds like you do.

charlie

Yes, I’m sure I don’t hate you. You’re drunk, just go to sleep Emma.

Emma

Okay. [Pause] Charlie?

charlie

What?

emma

Thanks for putting up with me.

charlie

No problem. You’re not that hard to put up with.

emma

Awh, thanks Charlie. Nighty night.

Charlie

Good night Emma.
