Summary

The novel is about a 12-year-old named Kai who finds a time machine in their school. At first, they use it to fix little things, like saving a pet or stopping accidents. But each time they change something, something else goes wrong in the future. Soon, Kai meets other versions of themselves from different times, and they realize that messing with time is causing big problems. To save everything, Kai has to stop jumping through time and learn to let things happen the way they’re supposed to—even if it means they might disappear.

The Discovery

Kai Carson had always been the curious type the kind of kid who couldn’t resist poking around where they weren’t supposed to. It wasn’t that they wanted to get into trouble; it was just that the world was full of mysteries, and someone had to solve them. So when the janitor left the basement door slightly ajar after school, Kai’s curiosity got the better of them.

“Just a quick peek,” Kai muttered under their breath, glancing around to make sure no one was watching. Their best friend, Ella, had already gone home, and the hallways were eerily quiet. With one last look over their shoulder, Kai slipped inside and let the heavy door close behind them.

The basement smelled of old books, metal, and something faintly burnt. Dim, flickering lights illuminated a maze of stacked boxes, forgotten furniture, and broken science lab equipment. Kai had expected dust and cobwebs, maybe an old mop bucket or two, but what caught their attention was something much, much stranger.

In the far corner of the room, covered by a tattered tarp, sat what looked like a giant, old-fashioned clock. But as Kai stepped closer, they realized it was something much more complex. Wires and gears jutted out from its base, and the control panel in front of it had buttons labelled in a language Kai didn’t recognise. The machine looked like it had been sitting there for decades, yet somehow, it still hummed softly, as if waiting.

Kai reached out and pulled the tarp away completely. The machine was unlike anything they’d ever seen. It had a circular metal doorway, just tall enough for someone to step through, surrounded by glowing blue symbols. A small screen flickered to life as Kai brushed the dust from the controls, displaying a series of numbers.

“What… is this?” Kai whispered. Their heart pounded. Was this some kind of secret government project? A forgotten science experiment? Whatever it was, it had been left here, hidden, and Kai had just found it.

Their fingers hovered over the buttons. Should they press one? Should they tell someone? The responsible thing to do would be to walk away, to pretend they’d never seen it. But that was never Kai’s style.

Before they could overthink it, their hand moved on its own, pressing a blinking green button.

The machine whirred to life. Lights flashed, gears spun, and the circular doorway filled with a swirling, silver mist. A rush of wind swept through the basement, sending papers flying. Kai stumbled back, eyes wide with a mixture of fear and awe.

And then, without warning, the machine sucked them in.

Kai landed hard on their hands and knees. The world around them was different brighter, busier. They were no longer in the school basement. Instead, they stood in what looked like the same school hallway, but something was… off.

Students bustled around, laughing and talking, but their clothes were different more old-fashioned. The posters on the walls advertised a school dance… in 1999.

Kai’s stomach twisted. They had travelled through time.

“No way,” they whispered. They turned in circles, taking in everything. It wasn’t just a trick of the eyes. The time machine had actually worked.

The realization sent a jolt of excitement through them. If they could travel back in time, could they change things? Fix mistakes? The possibilities were endless! But first, they had to figure out how to get back.

Kai ran back to where the basement door should have been, but in this version of the school, it was locked shut. Panic bubbled up in their chest. What if they were stuck? What if they’d never see Ella or their little brother Sammy again?

Just as they were about to lose hope, a voice interrupted their thoughts.

“Hey, are you lost?”

Kai spun around to see a student about their age, dressed in a denim jacket and sneakers straight out of an old movie.

“I uh, yeah, kinda,” Kai stammered. “I was just looking for the, um, science lab.”

The student raised an eyebrow. “It’s down the hall, second door on the left.”

Kai nodded quickly. “Right. Thanks.”

As they walked away, their mind raced. They needed to find the time machine. If it brought them here, it had to be somewhere in this timeline too, right?

Kai turned a corner and stopped in their tracks. There, down the hall, was a familiar face—Coach Tim. But he looked much younger than the version Kai knew. Their P.E. teacher was a student.

“Oh, this just keeps getting weirder,” Kai muttered.

Then, a realization hit them. If they were in the past, that meant everything they did could change the future.

Maybe… just maybe… they could use this to their advantage.

And that was when Kai made their first mistake.

Back in the basement of the present day, the time machine sat quietly, its blue symbols flickering dimly. A soft click echoed in the empty room as something shifted inside the machine—something small, but important. A warning message flashed across the screen, but no one was there to read it.

The timeline had already begun to change.
