Short Story

And there he stood. You could see in his eyes that he was terrified. Griffin stood there having no idea how to react. After he screamed I started stressing out. I didn’t know what to do. I didn’t know what I could do to calm him down. I don’t think I would be able to calm him down right away thinking about the fact that he has just watched me suck blood out of a human being. But I’m not sure if he will understand why I am doing this.

In his eyes, I’m a monster, but he doesn’t know that I won’t be able to survive without at least a little bit of blood every month. So to get that blood I have to hunt once a month. I don’t think he will ever trust me as much as he did before. And here we are. This part of the story.

After a minute I didn’t know what to do so I ran away. I was scared. Scared that he wouldn’t trust me again. Scared that he wouldn’t wanna be my friend again. Though I do think that he was more scared than I was. Griffin was terrified. I couldn’t see him that much in the dark, but I could recognize him and I immediately knew that he was horrified.

The second I came home I picked up my phone and started texting Griffin. I wanted to explain everything but he wouldn’t let me. I tried texting him and calling him, but nothing worked. I decided to wait until the next day and try to talk to him at school. I of course can’t explain it there, but I can at least try to get him to listen to meat someplace private. I don’t think he will trust me enough to go somewhere private, but it’s worth a try. I go to bed worrying about what will happen with Griffin, but I don’t think that this could get any worse.

The next day I woke up and got ready for school. I start thinking about what I’m going to say to Griffin at school, to get him to go somewhere private in order for me to explain everything. I came to school worried about what was going to happen. When I arrived at school I walked over to Griffin, but as I approached him, he walked away with a scared look on his face. I got even more nervous to go talk to him.

After many unfortunate tries I decided to try one last time. As I approached him he tried walking away but stopped and turned around as I shouted

“Wait!”

He looked weird but still creeped out at me.

“Don’t go, I can explain everything to you, but” she continued, to then whisper “I can’t do it here, we have to go to a private place for me to be able to explain why and how you saw what you saw last night.”

It looked like Griffin was considering it, but was scared to do it at the same time.

“If you want to give it a chance you can come over to my house after school so I can explain everything to you. Please, just think about it.” I continued and walked away. I didn’t hear from him for the rest of the school day.

I walked home curious if he was actually going to show up or not. I really hoped he would come and try to understand as I explained what he saw that night.

I came home and waited for him to hopefully show up. I waited a few hours until I finally lost hope and didn’t think he would even think about showing up. It was just at that point when I heard the doorbell ring. I went to open the door and saw Griffin standing there. A smile appeared on my face as I said

“Thank you for coming, and giving it a chance. Let’s go up to my room and I’ll try to explain. If you have any, please ask questions though there are some I’m not sure I can answer.” I got nervous as I continued talking.

As we walked upstairs I thanked him for coming. I could see that he was a little bit nervous, but got more comfortable as we went on. When we came into my room we sat down on my bed.

“So Veronica, please, explain why I saw you drink blood from a dead body in the middle of the night.” He asked.

I took a deep breath and started explaining.

“This will sound weird and I’m not sure if you will believe it, but whatever you do, you can’t say this to anyone. No matter how much you want or feel the need to, you can’t. Got it?” I got serious when I said this.

“OK” he looked at me weirdly, but getting more curious. It was obvious that he was still uncomfortable sitting beside me after what he saw.

I trusted him, but he wasn’t so sure if he could trust me. I continued explaining, revealing the truth I have been hiding from him ever since we met when we were children.

“I’m not sure how to tell you this, so I’ll just say it straight out. I am a vampire.” I had finally told him the truth and I felt relieved to finally have told him. I could see it on his face that he didn’t believe me at all.

“I know it is hard to believe, but it’s true,” I said before I decided to show my teeth as proof. He was horrified.

“I know this is crazy, but the only reason I hunt for people is once a time in the month where I need it for me to survive. And please don’t be scared of me because I would never hurt you and…” I was stressed out as I said it, but Griffin stopped me and calmed me down.

“Hey, don’t worry. It’s okay. I understand why you would keep that away from me. Just please don’t hide anything else from me again. And if you don’t mind, do you want to be friends again?” He said in a calm voice. He sounded comfortable and calm. I smiled and said “Yes” with happiness in my voice as I answered his question. We both smiled and were happy to be friends again.
