Ch 1: Reunion
Fifteen long years had slipped by since David last laid eyes on his cousin, and the absence of their connection weighed heavily on his heart. It wasn’t for lack of effort; rather, the relentless demands of school, coupled with family obligations, had drawn his attention away. David’s life took a sharp turn when he moved from his aunt’s cosy home to stay with his mother, a transition that brought with it a tide of challenges. His mother’s health had deteriorated significantly, a gradual decline that began the moment they lost David’s father. The void left by his father’s passing had shattered her spirit, and the prospect of facing the harsh world without her partner had taken a profound toll on her mental state.
In an attempt to shield David from the turmoil, the older members of their extended family made the difficult decision to send him away to live with Aunt Juliana Dickson when he was younger while they took care of his mother. It was a time of stability, one that offered David comfort and a sense of belonging. However, as he entered his teenage years and transitioned into adulthood by enrolling at the University of Cape Coast, David felt compelled to return to his mother’s side. He made a heartfelt promise to remain with her, to support her through the hardships, and to never abandon her in this tumultuous time. Yet, he understood that this vow would come at a cost-he would see less of the Dickson family he cherished and had grown close to over the years. Still, in his heart, he resolved to keep their memories alive, no matter the distance.
As days merged into weeks and weeks into months, life became increasingly difficult for David. Balancing his time between demanding classes and caring for his ailing mother consumed him, leaving little opportunity to connect with the Dicksons, the family he once held so dearly. He often found himself yearning for news about Shelley, his favourite cousin, especially since the last time they’d spoken, she was grappling with the pain of discovering her father’s infidelity. The entire Dickson family was in a state of upheaval, much like his own.
Fortunately, as his second semester began, a ray of hope emerged in the form of letters from Sam, Shelley’s younger brother. These letters became a lifeline, filled with updates about their family’s struggles and triumphs. Sam took care to share not just news about their well-being but also stories about Shelley, who was weathering her challenges with admirable strength. Through these written words, David felt a flicker of connection reignite, bridging the gap that had formed over the years. Each letter served as a reminder of the bonds he shared with the Dickson’s and the enduring love that still linked them, despite the distance and the trials they faced.
Now, here he was in the bustling heart of the big city, a place he had once dreamt about during long summer nights filled with ambition. David, now an adult and thriving as a real estate agent for a promising firm, stood at the entrance of a sleek medical outpatient department building, his heart racing with anticipation. He had taken the initiative to pay a surprise visit to his cousin Shelley, whom he hadn’t seen in ages. Equipped with the details of her workplace and a few hours of free time carved out of his busy schedule, he was excitedly pondering what words would best express his admiration and joy in seeing her again.
As he stood there, lost in thought and gazing at the busy foot traffic around him, the door to Shelley’s unit suddenly swung open. Out stepped Shelley, her presence lighting up the dreary concrete surroundings. She wore a stylish yet professional outfit that accentuated her vibrant personality, with her hair tied in a ponytail and a few strands cascading softly around her face. As soon as she caught sight of David, an expression of disbelief washed over her face, quickly morphing into sheer joy.
Recognition struck her like a bolt of lightning; not much had changed about him. His friendly smile was still just as warm, and the twinkle in his eyes remained familiar. Without hesitation, excitement surged through her, and she rushed toward him, her arms wide open.
“David, oh my God, it’s really you!” she exclaimed, her voice laced with both surprise and delight. “I have missed you so much!” They embraced tightly, the years of separation melting away in that heartfelt moment, full of nostalgia and happiness at their unexpected reunion.

-Sarah-
It had been far too long since Sarah had last seen Shelley or heard her voice. Their last conversation echoed in her mind; Shelley had been excitedly asking for advice on the perfect dress for a night out. But after that, silence engulfed them. Sarah had reached out countless times, but their connection faltered, all thanks to a pivotal moment that still weighed heavily on her conscience.
During her last visit to Shelley’s place, Sarah had opened up about her own struggles, overwhelming her friend with a stream of problems that kept them up late into the night, lost in a world of soap operas. Shelley had been patient at first, but Sarah could still recall the exhaustion in her eyes, the way Shelley finally had to tell her to get her act together. It was a wake-up call Sarah desperately needed. Recognizing the chaos in her life, she took that advice to heart and entered rehab. Now, she had been sober for a while, finding strength and clarity in her newfound lifestyle.
Today, with a mix of excitement and nervousness, Sarah decided to pay Shelley a surprise visit at the hospital. As she made her way through the familiar halls, she couldn’t shake the feeling that this time, things were about to take an unexpected turn. Little did she know, the biggest surprise was waiting for her just around the corner.
