Roman

Waking up on a desert island was not something Roman thought about when he went out with his friends, his friend Piere had just gotten engaged and they were out celebrating. Roman had always been a lightweight when it came to drinking so it was not a surprise when he only had a drink and a half and he was tipsy. His friends had offered to give him a ride home but he said he wanted to walk and get some air to try and sober up a bit, he made it a block and a half before he passed out. He could hear people talking but when he tried to open his eyes he found it difficult to do so, when he was finally able to open his eyes he was lying on a beach he didn't remember going to.

For the first few hours, he wandered around the island looking for any sign of people, he headed inland trying to find buildings or at the very least huts made of grass like in textbooks. After the first hour, he started to panic when he didn't find anything, by the fifth hour of not finding anything he started to accept his fate. Heading back to the beach he started looking for things to build a hut to sleep in for the night. He would have to come up with a plan in the morning, for the time being, he was in survival mode and all he could focus on was not dying on a deserted island.

It had been about a month since he woke up on a deserted island with no memory of how he got there or how he was going to get off the island safely. Island life had come easy for Roman, he now knew how to fish, build shelter, and make tools out of rocks; after the first few weeks of failing to escape he started to go crazy but he soon found his rhythm. Once he settled into life on the island, he picked up a routine that forced him to stop thinking about being alone and made him think about surviving. That is until one day he woke up to find a note left on his door by a mysterious person, it made him feel something he hadn't in a long time, hope.

Hello Roman,

I know you must have questions about where you are and why you are there, all will be revealed soon enough, just know you are not alone and someone will be there soon to explain everything. We have kept you all isolated for a reason, for now just hang tight and someone will be by shortly.

It had been a few days since the note was left on Roman’s door, the first day after the note he sat at his hut waiting all day for someone to show up after the third day he started to think he imagined the note. When someone did finally show up it was not who he expected at all, she materialized right in front of him which scared the hell out of him, he was not ready for that. She had neon green skin, yellow eyes, and long pink hair, her clothing looked like she had stepped out of a business catalog. Not knowing what else to do he ran into his house and closed the door; the woman just fazed through the door like it was nothing.

“Please don’t be afraid, I will not hurt you”

“How do I know that? You just fazed through that door like a ghost, am I dead and this is hell?”

“I assure you, you are very much alive”

“Why don't I believe you, I have been here for a month you are just now telling me what is going on”

“We understand your frustration and we will explain everything, we just need to go somewhere first”

The woman waved her hand and they were no longer in Roman’s hut, they were in a room with what looked like a couch, two chairs, and a coffee table. The abrupt change in location was startling and he felt himself getting sick. She gestured for him to sit down so he chose the chair that was furthest away from her, she sat on the couch with her arms folded.

“I know you must be angry about us isolating you”

“Angry, are you serious? Do you know how many times I tried to get off this island?”

“We were monitoring your every move so yes we saw all your attempts”

“So you just watched me try to escape knowing I couldn't get off the island no matter what I did?”

“We had to make sure you thought you were really trapped on an island with no way off”

“You said you were going to tell me why I am here”, he was getting angry.

“Right, you are part of a group picked to help save your planet”

“What’s wrong with the planet?”

“A lot of things, but all you need to know is that you have been picked to help save it”

“Why me, I am not as smart as you might think”

“We are not looking for intelligence”

“I am also not as strong as you might think”

“We are also not looking for strength either, we are looking average people just like you”

Roman thought about it for a few minutes, if they weren't looking for intelligence and they weren't looking for strength, then what were they looking for? They could have picked anyone for this, so why was he so special, something wasn't adding up to him and he was going to figure out what.

“What do I have to do exactly?”

“We need you to work with someone from our planet”

“What do you mean work with them? Like I said I am not that smart”

“You will be helping them to create something that could potentially help save your planet”

“How long do I have to work with this person and will I be let go once it's done?”

“Once the project is completed you will be sent back to the moment you were taken”

“Are you who I’m supposed to do this with?”

“No, you will be assigned a partner, they will arrive within the week to get things started”

“Does the other person know why they are here?”

“Yes, they have volunteered to do this for the sake of your people and ours”

“Do I get a choice in the matter at all?”

“I’m afraid not, we are running out of time”

“Well since I don’t have a say in anything let’s get this over with”

The strange woman waved her hand once again and they were back in Roman’s hut; she let him know that his partner would be arriving soon. She left the way she came, fazing through the door, leaving a half angry half curious Roman to get ready to meet his new partner, it was clear this was his only way to get home.

After two days of silence, there was a knock on the door, he opened it to find a woman with neon pink skin with red spots all over standing at his door. She had blue hair that stopped just below her shoulder blades, with green eyes and bright red lips. He was so stunned that he could not say anything, he just stood there looking at her in awe and fascination.

“Hello Roman, my name is Sinaree (sin-are-re), I have been assigned as your partner”

Hearing her voice broke the trance he was in, he moved out of the way to let her in, she was like something out of a magazine, he wanted to touch her skin but thought better of it. He could not stop staring at her as she walked around his hut, he had never seen a real-life alien before and now he had met two and was going to be living with one. When she was done inspecting his place she sat down on what was supposed to be a chair and beckoned him to sit next to her. He was too nervous to sit so he just stood where he was, she gave him a questioning look but decided to let him stay where he was if it made him more comfortable.

“I feel we must get to know each other before we start this journey of creation together”

“Your completely right, we should get to know each other”

“I was not told anything about you as they thought it would be best if we got to know each other organically”

“I was not told anything about you either so I guess we are even”

“I suppose you are right, shall we get started?”

They spent the rest of the day talking about everything from the differences between their planets to how space travel is possible for most species, but that was only scratching the surface. When night fell upon them it was time to figure out the sleeping arrangements, he was not comfortable sleeping in the same bed as her.

“I guess we should figure out the sleeping arrangements”

“You are quite right and as I can sense you are a bit trepidatious, I shall create my own sleeping chamber”

“That sounds like a good idea, I don't want to have to worry about being probed”, Roman tried to make a joke

“We do not do that, that is a myth as your people call it”

Roman watched as the woman waved her hand and a door appeared on the other side of his hut, he didn't know how they did it but he was not going to ask at that moment. He was relieved to know he was not alone anymore however there was the thought of having to save the planet. The other thought going through his head was why he was left on the island for that long all alone, they could have told him all this from the beginning.

The morning came after a night of restless sleep, his thoughts kept drifting back to the alien sleeping in the other room and how he and her were going to create something together. He didn’t know the first thing about working with an alien but I guess that is what she was there for, to help him. Trying to make a good impression on his house guest he got up early and made breakfast to show her how they do things on planet Earth. Porridge and berries were all that he could make but he was hoping that now that he knew the truth he could get real supplies. When she came out of her room he was once again mesmerized by her beauty that he forgot to speak, she smiled at him and sat on one of the chairs to watch him.

“Have you made a nourishment of some kind?”

“Yeah, I made porridge with berries, I hope you like it”

“I have never had this so I guess we will find out”

“I’m hoping that I can get real supplies soon, now that I know what is really going on”

“I will talk to someone about moving us into a more efficient living space”

“That would be great, I like my hut but it has grown a bit tight, I would love a beach house since we are on a beach”

“We can stay on the beach if you like, I am sure they will want us to be in more conducive living quarters”

“Yeah, we will need a good place to work if we are going to do this whole creation thing”

“You have made a good point, I shall bring it up when I talk to my superior about what we need”

“Alright then, let's get it”

They spent the rest of the morning coming up with a plan for how they wanted to interior of the house to look and where things were going to go. Roman began to have a bit of fun designing his dream house, he had always stayed in crappy apartments so this would be nice to stay somewhere that was truly his. He could feel himself forgetting about his old life and that was not what he wanted, he had to remember why he was doing this, to get back home
