A burning past

The night air was thick with smoke and the lingering scent of burnt metal.

Evie Sinclair stood on the edge of the ruined Shadowhaven compound, the wind whipping through her dark hair. The once-imposing facility—the place that had trained her, broken her, turned her into something ruthless and unyielding—was now a charred skeleton of its former self.

And she had helped burn it down.

A cold gust blew ash into the air, making her eyes sting. Or maybe that was just exhaustion creeping in.

Behind her, Adrian Wolfe approached, his boots crunching softly against the rubble.

"This place looks better than I remember," he muttered.

Evie let out a breath of laughter, but it was short-lived.

Because no matter how much they wanted to believe this was over, they both knew better.

Shadowhaven had been a monster, but killing a monster didn’t mean it stayed dead.

And neither of them had escaped without scars.

A WAR NEVER TRULY ENDS

"We shouldn’t be here, Sinclair."

Adrian’s voice was low, edged with something tense and unreadable.

Evie turned to face him, crossing her arms. “We need answers.”

Adrian let out a sharp breath, glancing around. His sharp green eyes scanned the wreckage, always watching, always calculating.

He had been like that since they left the fight behind—since Graves had disappeared into the shadows, leaving them with more questions than victories.

They both knew he was still out there.

Waiting.

Planning.

"And what, exactly, do you expect to find?" Adrian asked, his voice dropping into that low, knowing tone that meant he already had an opinion on the matter.

Evie ignored it. “Something. Anything. Graves didn’t just let this place fall without a backup plan.”

Adrian’s jaw clenched.

Because they both knew she was right.

ECHOES OF THE PAST

The remains of Shadowhaven were eerily silent.

Once, this had been a fortress, buzzing with agents, secrets, and whispered betrayals. Now, it was nothing but a tomb.

Evie crouched near what had been the old records room, brushing away debris and ash as she scanned the ruined walls.

Then—she saw it.

A half-burnt file cabinet, its edges blackened from fire, but the lock mechanism still intact.

Her pulse kicked up.

Adrian must have noticed because he was already kneeling beside her, his fingers moving to check the lock mechanism.

"You think something survived in there?"

Evie pulled a lockpick from her sleeve. “Only one way to find out.”

The metallic click of the lock breaking was music to her ears.

She pulled open the drawer, her fingers moving over the partially burned folders, her eyes scanning for anything useful.

Then—her breath hitched.

Because buried under the rubble and ash, there was a single untouched document.

And it was old.

Much older than the facility itself.

She picked it up carefully, her heart pounding as she read the first line.

SHADOWHAVEN RECRUITMENT: 32 YEARS AGO.

Evie’s stomach twisted.

She felt Adrian shift closer beside her, his voice low. “Sinclair, what the hell did you just find?”

She didn’t answer.

Because she was already flipping through the pages, her mind racing as she scanned the names listed.

Then—she stopped cold.

Her fingers went rigid.

Because there, in bold ink, was a name she had never expected to see.

A name she had never even known existed in Shadowhaven’s files.

Elena Graves.

Her mother.

THE FAMILY CONNECTION

Evie barely heard Adrian say her name.

Her breath was too loud, her pulse too sharp in her ears.

She knew her mother had worked for the agency before she died.

But Shadowhaven had always denied it.

Had always claimed she had never been part of their system.

That had been a lie.

And not just any lie—a carefully constructed one.

Adrian leaned over her shoulder, his breath warm against her neck as he read over her shoulder.

"Wait. Elena Graves?" His voice was sharp now. “I thought your mother’s name was Sinclair?”

Evie slowly closed the file, her mind struggling to process the truth.

She swallowed hard. “Sinclair was her married name.”

Adrian went still.

Then, his voice dropped into something darker.

"You’re telling me your mother’s maiden name was Graves?"

Evie didn’t respond.

Because there was nothing to say.

It was right there. In black and white.

Sebastian Graves—the man they had spent their lives hunting, the man responsible for Shadowhaven’s most ruthless operations—hadn’t just been a mentor to the agency.

He had been her mother’s twin brother.

LIAM’S REACTION

Evie barely remembered moving.

One moment she was kneeling in the ashes of her past.

The next, she was storming back toward their vehicle, the file clutched tightly in her hands.

Adrian was right behind her, his footsteps calm but relentless.

They reached the vehicle where Liam and Damien had been keeping watch.

Liam looked up from his perch against the car, eyes narrowing. “Found something?”

Evie didn’t hesitate. She threw the file onto the hood of the car.

"Read it."

Liam arched a brow but reached for the document.

He started reading—and froze.

His fingers tightened around the paper, his breath coming out shallow and sharp.

Damien, noticing the shift, straightened. “What?”

Liam’s voice was quiet, almost numb.

"Our mother was a Graves."

Damien frowned. “Yeah, we know.”

Liam finally looked up, his face pale with something unreadable.

"No, you don’t. She was Sebastian Graves’ twin sister."

Damien went still.

Adrian exhaled sharply, rubbing a hand down his face. “Yeah. That was our reaction, too.”

Liam dropped the file onto the car, his jaw tightly clenched.

"That son of a bitch didn’t just betray Shadowhaven. He betrayed his own family."

Evie swallowed. “And he killed her to take control.”

Silence.

Long. Unforgiving.

Then—Liam let out a slow, dark breath.

"Then I guess we’re not just taking him down."

He looked up, his eyes burning with cold, sharp fury.

"We’re ending him."

And for the first time since this all started—

Evie felt it, too.

Because this wasn’t just a mission anymore.

This was family.

And family meant war.
