Storm

Matthias grumbled. The sky, in return, did as well, snapping with lightning and thunder. Matthias finally opened his eyes. All he wanted was some sleep. He continued to toss and turn throughout the storm, but he couldn't go back to sleep.

Once he closed his eyes again, he felt a drip of water pat the scar across his eye. He jolted up, frustrated, and looked up. Groaning, he stood up, lit up a used candle, and managed to find a pail to place on the mattress. The roof was leaking... again.

It was too dark to go out and fix it, he thought. But he was used to so many occurrences, so what was the harm in doing so anyways? It's not like anyone or anything would disturb him.

But how? How would he...?

Magic--?

No, no, it's too risky. He can't use magic, not now. Not ever since...

Something suddenly intruded his thoughts. A sound... where was it come from. Matthias turned to the window and frowned. Who's knocking at this hour?

"Who is it?" he exclaimed.

No answer.

"Didn't you hear me?" he snapped. "Who is it?"

No answer.

He rolled his eyes. "I swear to the gods... if you're some random commoner tricking the outcast of society..." he started as he went to open the door.

The door creaked open as Matthias was expected someone to be there. His brow furrowed as he surveyed the area. All he could see was the tall trees shading the pouring rain. Absolutely no one. "Hello--?"

The rain continued to pour, filling the dead silence of Matthias' confusion.

Matthias looked down and gasped.

"A baby?!"
