Chapter 1
It was a warm summer morning, when my best friend Lucy messaged me. Hey Justice rise and shine I got some coffee and doughnuts for us, I’ll be there in the next 45 minutes. I sighed as I rolled over out of bed and jumped in the shower.
I decided to wear a nice pin straight skirt that came just above my knees and a white button up blouse to go with it. Lucy got me an interview for where she worked and she swore up and down that I would get the assistant job. Hopefully because I just moved here and need to find a job that pays decent enough.
About 40 minutes later there was a honk outside. It was Lucy. I was gonna drive today, but Lucy insisted on picking me up. I didn’t argue. We finally made it to Cross construction. It was a massive building maybe even a skyscraper but I wasn’t entirely sure. Lucy hugged me and wished me good luck, as I went to the elevator and she went down the hall.
As soon as the elevator doors were about to shut, someone stopped them. This man was massive. He was wearing a dark blue suit with a white shirt underneath. His black hair was combed to the right and shaved underneath.
He was about 6’2 and I’d guess about 220 pounds. His eyes were dark like sin. He stood next to me. Maybe too close for comfort, but man did he smell amazing. It was a mixture of cedar wood and mint. I couldn’t help but breathe in the scent deeply, as he looked down at me.
Suddenly he spoke and that voice could make any woman drop her panties. “Haven’t seen you around before. What’s your name?” He asked me, as I cleared my throat and spoke. “My name is Justice and I have an interview with Kane Cross.” His eyes got darker if that was even possible. “Don’t get on his bad side, that’s all I have to say.” He smirked and left the elevator.
I was in the elevator for about 10 more floors it seemed, when I finally got to the floor I needed to be on. I walked into a room and it was massive. Blue and whites and the decor was very strange. I seen an older woman behind the counter so I walked up. “Hello welcome to Cross construction, how may I assist you today?” She asked in here sweet quiet voice like all older ladies have. “Hi, I have an interview with Kane Cross at 9 am.” I said with a smile.
She nodded her head and picked up the phone. “Mr.Cross, there is a young woman here for an interview.” The conversation was short, as she hung up Abe spoke. “Mr. Cross will see you now. Go to the left and all the way down on the right is gods office. God luck sweetie.” She said with a smile, as I smiled back and headed towards his office.
As I reached the door, I knocked slightly, and heard him speak. “Door is open.” I opened the door slowly and stepped inside. His office smelled like the mysterious man that was in the elevator with me earlier, as I seen a man staring out the window. He turned around and walked towards me. It was the same man that was in the elevator with me! Why didn’t he say he was Kane Cross?
He came and shook my hand. “Well you’re early and I like that.” He said, as he spoke. “I’m Kane Cross and you must be Justice.” He spoke. “Yes, sir, but why didn’t you say anything in the elevator earlier?” I asked, as he chuckled. “First impressions, I guess. If you have known who I was would you still work here?” He asked.
I stopped and thought about what he asked for a second as he spoke once again. “That is what I thought.” He said as I looked into his dark eyes. They were filled with a mysterious look. “Do you have your resume?” He asked changing the subject, as I nodded and my head and reached into my bag and handed it to him. He skimmed through it and smiled. “Very nice I must say.”
The interview finally came to an end. “Well it was very nice to meet you and someone will call you with my decision.” Mr. Cross said. I smiled as I spoke “thank you sir, I appreciate the opportunity.” As I walked out and headed back home.
As I left the building, my heart was racing. I couldn’t believe I’d just met Kane Cross—the man who had been in the elevator with me, and the man I was interviewing with. I replayed our interaction over and over in my head. He was so different from what I expected. His presence was overwhelming, but in a way that kept me on edge, wanting to learn more about him.
Lucy’s car was waiting for me outside. She leaned over the passenger seat with a big grin on her face. “Well? How’d it go?” she asked eagerly.
I got in and buckled up. “I think it went well. I mean, I made it through the whole interview, but… I’m still kind of in shock about meeting him. I didn’t know he was Kane Cross until after the elevator conversation,” I replied, still processing everything.
Lucy’s eyes widened. “What? You didn’t know? Oh my God, you met him in the elevator and had no clue? That’s crazy! How was he?”
“Intense,” I said, running a hand through my hair. “He’s a lot taller than I thought. And his eyes… I don’t know how to explain it. They were just… dark. Not in a bad way, but kind of mysterious, you know?”
“Uh oh,” Lucy said with a teasing tone. “Sounds like someone’s intrigued.”
I laughed nervously. “Maybe. I just don’t know what to make of him. He was professional in the interview, but I couldn’t shake the feeling that he was sizing me up. Like he was trying to figure out something about me.”
“Well, that’s Kane Cross for you,” she said with a wink. “He’s one of those guys who knows exactly what he wants, and he’s not afraid to go after it. But he’s also not easy to read.”
I nodded, feeling a little overwhelmed. “Yeah, I’m starting to realize that. But if I get the job, maybe I’ll get to learn more about him. We’ll see.”
Lucy smiled at me, obviously excited. “You’ve got this, Justice. I can feel it. Just stay confident and keep being yourself. You’ve got what it takes.”
We drove back in comfortable silence, but my mind kept racing. Kane Cross. The man who seemed so untouchable and enigmatic. Would he hire me? And if he did, what would working for him be like? Only time would tell.
