Chapter 1

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, and Isabel Carter stepped into the Devereaux Industries headquarters, gripping her file so tightly her knuckles turned white.

This was it. Her first day.

She’d worked so hard to get here—the dream job, the kind people fought for. But standing in the marble lobby of the tallest skyscraper in the city, staring at the gold-plated name DEVERAUX INDUSTRIES stretched across the wall in elegant, intimidating letters…

She realized something.

She wasn’t ready.

Not for this world. Not for him.

The King of Kings

Everyone in the business world knew his name.

Damien Devereaux.

Not just a CEO—a ruler.

He didn’t just own this company; he owned half the world. Tech, finance, real estate, medicine—there wasn’t a market he hadn’t conquered, a boardroom he didn’t dominate.

And more than that?

He was the most feared, respected, and untouchable man on the planet.

Cold. Calculated. Merciless.

People said he could ruin an entire company with a single signature.

That he didn’t feel.

That women threw themselves at him, but he didn’t care for love, didn’t believe in it.

And now?

Isabel was about to step into his kingdom.

“You Won’t Last A Week”

She swallowed hard and made her way to the reception desk.

The woman sitting there barely glanced at her. Sleek bun, sharp features, bored expression.

“Isabel Carter,” Isabel said softly, forcing a polite smile. “I’m the new junior assistant for the CEO’s office.”

The receptionist finally looked at her—really looked.

And then?

She laughed.

Not the kind laugh. The pitying one.

“Oh, honey,” she sighed, shaking her head. “You won’t last a week.”

Isabel blinked. “Excuse me?”

The woman smirked, flipping through some files. “Damien Devereaux doesn’t keep assistants. They either quit, get fired, or—” she gave a dramatic pause “—break.

The words sent a chill down Isabel’s spine.

The Office That Felt Like a Throne Room

A few minutes later, Isabel was being led up to the top floor.

Everything about this place was immaculate, silent, cold. The halls stretched endlessly, lined with floor-to-ceiling glass, so pristine it felt like stepping into another world.

And then she saw it.

The door.

CEO – DAMIEN DEVEREAUX

Her heart pounded.

This is it.

She took a shaky breath and knocked softly.

Nothing.

She knocked again.

Silence.

Then, a deep voice, cutting through the air like a blade.

“Enter.”

Isabel froze.

The voice was low, smooth, emotionless—like it didn’t belong to a man, but something far more dangerous.

She pushed the door open…

And met Damien Devereaux for the first time.

The First Look

He didn’t glance up.

Didn’t acknowledge her.

Didn’t even breathe differently.

He sat behind an impossibly large black desk, flipping through papers like she didn’t exist. Tall, broad-shouldered, dressed in an all-black suit, not a hair out of place.

Sharp jawline. Ice-cold gray eyes. A man so perfect it was inhuman.

He had an aura of absolute control. Of power so deep, it swallowed everything in the room.

Isabel forgot how to breathe.

She’d seen pictures of him before. Read about him in articles.

But in person?

He was terrifying.

Finally, he looked up.

And when those cold, dead eyes met hers?

She felt it.

The unshakable truth.

This man would destroy her.

“You Won’t Last a Week.”

Silence stretched between them, thick and suffocating.

Then—

“You’re late.”

Isabel flinched. Late? She was exactly on time!

“I—I’m sorry, Mr. Devereaux, I was told to wait at—”

“I don’t care.” He cut her off.

The words were like a slap.

“I—I just—”

“Did I ask for an excuse?” He leaned back, eyes sharp and unforgiving. “No. I asked for competence. Clearly, I overestimated you.”

Heat rose to Isabel’s cheeks. “I—”

“Save it.”

He closed the file he was reading and finally—finally—looked at her properly.

And that’s when he smirked.

But it wasn’t a kind smirk.

It was a warning.

“You won’t last a week.”

The Game Begins

Isabel clenched her fists.

Everyone had already decided she would fail.

Damien Devereaux didn’t believe in her.

He saw her as nothing.

Just another useless employee. Another girl too fragile for his world.

But Isabel wasn’t going to break.

Not today. Not ever.

So she lifted her chin, steadied her voice, and said—

“I guess I’ll just have to prove you wrong, then.”

And for the first time since she walked in, Damien actually looked surprised.

Just for a second.

Then, that cold smirk returned.

“We’ll see, Miss Carter. We’ll see.”

And just like that…

The game began.

But What Isabel Didn’t Know…

She thought this was just a job.

She thought Damien Devereaux was just a ruthless CEO.

She had no idea that stepping into this world meant stepping into something far more dangerous.

Because Damien wasn’t just a businessman.

He was something much worse.

And Isabel?

She had just become his biggest problem.

And one day soon…

He would decide to erase her.

Permanently.
