Kyouka's Journey

A traveler named Kyouka had grown bored of the nations marked on the world map. She longed to explore a place unknown to most of humanity. Fortunately, Kyouka was good friends with the Sun God, who revealed to her the existence of a hidden country. Intrigued and surprised, Kyouka begged the Sun God to tell her more about this mysterious land. The Sun God warned her that the villages there were strange and unlike anything she had ever encountered. Unfazed, Kyouka confidently declared that she wasn’t afraid. Impressed by her determination, the Sun God revealed the route to this enigmatic country.

To Kyouka’s surprise, the country was much closer to her location than she had imagined. She set off on her journey and soon arrived in a land called Discord. Her first stop was a village named Invalid. Kyouka was puzzled—how could a village be "invalid"? As she explored, she unexpectedly encountered the Sun God in human form. When she asked why he was there, he explained that he often visited the village to relax among its peculiar inhabitants. Kyouka’s curiosity grew.

In Invalid, she met a man named Erick, a hyperactive individual notorious for flirting with multiple women in the village. Though Erick was seen as intelligent and knowledgeable about life, he lacked emotional understanding. When Kyouka greeted him, Erick responded with a barrage of random questions, as if she were in an interview. Overwhelmed, Kyouka decided to leave the village, but just as she was about to go, a young boy named Dazai appeared.

Dazai, who had no understanding of parenthood, immediately began calling Kyouka "Mother." Touched by his innocence, Kyouka emotionally accepted the role and decided to adopt him. Together, they continued their journey.

Next, Kyouka arrived at a village run by a man named Shadow. Instead of a traditional village, Shadow operated a club, inviting women to make the place feel lively. Shadow invited Kyouka to join, and she accepted. Upon entering the Shadow Realm, Kyouka was amazed by the talents on display. However, her visit took an unexpected turn when she met Ankit, a football enthusiast who accidentally kicked a ball so hard that it injured her. Frustrated, Kyouka left the village.

As she wandered near the borders of the villages, Kyouka encountered Ezio, a friend of the Sun God’s human form. Ezio greeted her warmly and asked about her well-being. Relieved to meet someone who seemed normal, Kyouka accompanied Ezio to his friend Reivax’s village.

Reivax’s village was filled with freelancers, hardworking individuals who spent their days immersed in their jobs. Since Kyouka was on vacation, she found the work-centric environment unappealing and decided to leave.

After visiting all these villages, Kyouka was utterly exhausted. She decided it was time to return home. However, as she tried to leave, she realized she was trapped by the curse of Invalid. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t cross the village’s borders. Panicked, she heard a haunting voice murmuring, "Mumma." In the distance, she saw Dazai, the boy she had adopted, calling out to her in a chilling tone.

Desperate, Kyouka prayed to the Sun God for help. But the Sun God refused, explaining that by forming a family in the village, she had bound herself to it. Now, she was obligated to stay and fulfill her duties as a villager. Defeated, Kyouka realized her fate: she would spend the rest of her life interacting with the village’s odd inhabitants and raising Dazai.

In the end, Kyouka—a curious traveler who had sought adventure—found herself settling down in a strange land, forever tied to the very place she had once been so eager to explore.

Heika van Walderveen: I had to get used to the style. It’s a lot of switching and getting back into the story of the characters. Also the different timelines were a bit confusing in the beginning. But once you’re used to it, it’s really quite original. The plot is good, but it’s only book 1 (out of 3), but so far so good...
