Prologue
New York City had been Ella’s refuge, a place where the past could be buried beneath the hum of traffic and the glow of neon signs. She had built a life of quiet ambition, working as an editor for a publishing house, spending her days buried in manuscripts and her nights lost in the anonymity of a city that never stood still. The routine had become her comfort: morning coffee at the cafe on 5th Avenue, evening jogs through Central Park, weekends consumed by deadlines and the occasional dinner with colleagues who never pried too deeply. She preferred it that way.
For years, she had convinced herself that the past was another world, locked behind the doors of her childhood home in Blackwood Hollow. But some ghosts refuse to be silenced. No matter how far she ran, no matter how deeply she buried herself in the rhythm of city life, the past had never truly let her go.
It started with a phone call—unexpected and urgent. A familiar voice, aged with time but still unmistakable, reached across the miles, carrying news that shattered her carefully crafted distance. Her father was dead. And with his passing, Blackwood Manor, the house she had spent a lifetime trying to forget, was now hers.
She hesitated at first, fingers tightening around the phone, heart pounding against years of self-imposed exile. Yet there was no choice. Some ties could not be severed. Some fates could not be escaped.
With a single suitcase and a heart weighed down by memories, Ella left behind the towering skyline and the pages of stories that weren’t hers, embarking on a homeward journey she had sworn never to make.
Blackwood Hollow had been waiting for her.
It had never truly let go.
And this time, it would not be ignored.
