Summary

A poem I wrote on the morning of November 27th, 2024. The title is the time that my grandmother died. When I heard the news, I immediately wrote this poem, raw and unfiltered. She had a great long life, full of laughter and love. I read this at her funeral, and am now deciding to release it on what would’ve been her 89th birthday today. I love grandma, truly. I hope you hear this poem forever more…

I know that you are at peace now, far away from us

And even when you were still here

You shined for all of us because

Only you could make the room glow

Even after you had to go

I’m sorry that I didn’t see you

But now I know I didn’t need to

It would’ve torn me up inside

Now I know I can confide

In the fact that you are resting now

No matter why, no matter how

You always put a smile on my face

Even in your final days

I thought of you day and night

Now you’ve given up the fight

But that is not defeat, in fact

It’s truly the strongest act

To let go, be free, and fly away

To lead us on to brighter days

I love Grandma Oertli, I do

I write this all because of you
