Chapter One: Marked for Death
Chapter One: Marked for Death
The scent of blood and damp earth clung to the night air as Selene ran, her breath ragged, her body aching from days without rest. The full moon above bathed the dense forest in a silver glow, casting shifting shadows through the towering trees. She wasn’t just running—she was being hunted.
Her pursuers were close. She could hear their snarls in the distance, the heavy pounding of paws against the soil, a deadly rhythm meant to wear her down. Every muscle in her body burned, but she couldn’t stop—not now, not when she was so close to the border. Beyond that line was unknown territory, the land of the Twin Alphas, a pack feared by all.
Selene had spent her entire life avoiding packs, living in the shadows, always on the move. Yet tonight, she had no choice. If she stayed in her old territory, she would die. If she crossed into the domain of the Twin Alphas, she might not survive—but at least she had a chance.
A chilling howl cut through the night, closer this time, the sound sending a shiver down her spine. She knew that voice. Mathias. Her old Alpha. The one who wanted her dead. His wolves would show no mercy. They never had. Her lungs burned as she pushed forward, vaulting over a fallen log, her bare feet cut and bruised from the unforgiving terrain.
Then, suddenly, silence.
Selene slowed, her pulse a wild drumbeat in her ears. She strained to listen, her sharp senses reaching beyond the trees. Nothing. The absence of sound was more terrifying than the chase. A trap.
And then she felt it—a presence. No, two. The hair on the back of her neck rose before she even turned. She was no longer alone.
A deep growl rumbled through the darkness, vibrating in her bones. The scent of power, of something primal and dominant, flooded her senses. When she turned, her breath hitched.
Two figures stood at the edge of the clearing, towering and motionless. Silver eyes gleamed through the night, locked onto her with an intensity that made her stomach twist. Their presence was overwhelming, radiating command in a way that sent every instinct screaming in warning—and something else.
Need.
Lucian and Kade. The Twin Alphas.
Selene had heard the rumors, the whispered tales of their brutality, their power. She never thought she’d face them. Never wanted to. But now, standing before them, she knew one truth:
She had just traded one danger for another.
