Chapter 1

La terrasse du petit café était presque vide en cette fin d’après-midi. Le soleil déclinait lentement, projetant une lumière dorée sur les tables en bois. Adam remuait distraitement son expresso, fixant son ami d’enfance, Yassir, qui soufflait sur son thé à la menthe brûlant.


Cela faisait des années qu’ils ne s’étaient pas vus, et pourtant, dès les premiers échanges, ils s’étaient retrouvés comme avant. Mais, très vite, la conversation avait pris un tournant plus sérieux.


— Alors, tu es vraiment devenu athée ? demanda Yassir en arquant un sourcil.


— C’est une évidence, répondit Adam en haussant les épaules. J’ai simplement cessé de croire en ce qui n’a pas de preuves.


Yassir secoua la tête avec un sourire mi-amusé, mi-perplexe.


— Tu sais, Adam, la foi ne fonctionne pas comme une équation mathématique. Dieu ne se prouve pas, il se ressent.


— Justement, c’est là le problème, répliqua Adam en croisant les bras. Si une chose ne peut être prouvée ni démontrée, alors comment affirmer qu’elle existe ?


Yassir prit une gorgée de son thé avant de répondre :


— Regarde autour de toi… l’univers, la nature, la perfection du corps humain… Tout ça, c’est bien la preuve qu’il y a un Créateur. Rien ne peut venir du hasard.


Adam esquissa un sourire avant de poser sa tasse avec calme.


— L’argument du « tout est trop complexe pour être le fruit du hasard »… Il est séduisant, mais il repose sur un sophisme. L’évolution explique très bien cette complexité. Et puis, si tout doit avoir un créateur, alors qui a créé Dieu ?


Yassir fronça les sourcils.


— Dieu est éternel. Il existe sans début ni fin.


— Et pourquoi cette exception ? Pourquoi ton raisonnement fonctionne pour Dieu, mais pas pour l’univers lui-même ? Si quelque chose peut être éternel, pourquoi ne serait-ce pas l’univers plutôt qu’un être invisible et indétectable ?


Yassir ouvrit la bouche, puis la referma, réfléchissant. Adam continua :


— On m’a appris à croire sans poser de questions, à accepter des textes vieux de milliers d’années sans jamais les remettre en cause. Mais la vérité, c’est que chaque avancée scientifique, chaque découverte, réduit toujours un peu plus la place de Dieu. Il était autrefois la seule explication aux éclairs, aux maladies, aux tremblements de terre… Aujourd’hui, tout cela a une explication rationnelle.


— Mais la science ne peut pas tout expliquer, rétorqua Yassir.


— Pas encore, admit Adam. Mais ce que la science ignore aujourd’hui, elle le découvrira demain. L’ignorance d’aujourd’hui n’est pas une preuve de l’existence de Dieu.


Un silence s’installa entre eux. Le serveur passa à côté, déposant la note sans un mot. Le soleil était presque couché.


Yassir soupira, le regard perdu sur la mousse de son thé.


— Je comprends ton point de vue, dit-il enfin. Mais croire me réconforte. La prière me donne de la force, l’idée d’un au-delà me rassure.


Adam hocha la tête avec bienveillance.


— Et c’est ça, la vraie raison pour laquelle les gens croient. Pas parce que c’est vrai, mais parce que ça les aide à supporter la vie.


Yassir ne répondit pas. Il savait, au fond de lui, qu’Adam n’avait pas tort. Mais parfois, la vérité importe moins que le réconfort qu’apporte une illusion.
