Night Stalker

The night air pulsed with the scent of potential prey, tightening my throat with anticipation. I craved these nights – the ones when humans spilled onto the streets, Saturday's being the peak. They emerged like moths to the city's lights and music, drawn by rhythms I didn't understand. All that mattered was satiation. The ache in my throat was a relentless reminder; I needed this. No other way to quell the new burning.

A woman's laughter mingled with her friends' voices, then she broke away, claiming drunkenness. I scented opportunity. Mumbling or singing – I couldn't discern – she stumbled, scraping hands and knees on cold asphalt before shedding her loud shoes. Barefoot, she still lurched unpredictably, etching a smile on my face.

Easy prey tonight.

She drew closer, her scent overwhelming, until I stepped from a doorway's shadows in a broken home's skeletal embrace. No one lived here; no care lingered in its hollow halls. Startled, she laughed giddily. "You scared me, mister. Didn't your mother teach you never sneak up on a lady?"

That voice... familiar. The curve of her jaw, golden hair cascading like moonlit silk, green eyes shimmering... recognition sliced through my newfound hunger. I shifted into a sliver of light, and she gasped.

"Damon?" Her whisper hung like a suspended heartbeat.

"Alice." I breathed, the word a fragile thread. My fiancé.

I stood frozen, the word "Alice" lingering like a whispered secret between us. Her eyes, those familiar green eyes, widened with a mix of shock and something else – fear? Recognition? They searched mine, as if trying to reconcile the man she knew with the creature I had become.

"Damon, what... how is this possible?" Her voice trembled, barely above a whisper. She took a step back, her bare feet silent on the cold pavement.

I reached out, instinct driving me, but she flinched. The movement was subtle, yet it cut through my... hunger? Confusion swirled. I hadn't expected this.

Her.

Alive.

Here.

"Alice, I..." My voice was gravel, unfamiliar. How to explain the unexplainable? The burning that drove me, the newness of this existence.

She seemed to steady herself, gaze locked on mine. "Damon, you were... you were in the accident. They said you..." Her words trailed, perhaps grasping the unspoken truth: I couldn't be the man she remembered.

Memories flickered – fragments of us, laughter, plans. A life undone.

"I woke up," I managed, voice low. "Different. I don't... I don't know how."

Alice's eyes filled with tears, but she didn't cry. She was always strong, my Alice.

"Different how?" The question hung, fraught with unspoken terrors.

How to tell her? That I craved something fundamental to her humanity? That the burning within demanded it?

"I need..." I paused, struggling for words. "I need you to leave, Alice. Now."

"No, Damon. I won't leave you again. Never again." Her voice firmed, though fear scented the air overpowering her arousal.

My control frayed like a thread pulled taut. The burning intensified, clawing at my restraint. "Alice, please." I whispered it, a desperate prayer.

She didn't retreat. Instead, Alice stepped closer, into my space, nearly driving me mad with the proximity. Her scent enveloped me – familiar, intoxicating. Fear swirled in her eyes, yet longing and confusion lingered there too, like shadows on water.

Her hand rose, soft touch brushing my face and felt it.

A spark of humanity.

A brand against my cold skin.

My hands, like autonomous things, slid down the length of her arms, fingers tracing patterns on her skin.

The touch ignited something feral.

A shudder coursed through me, primal and raw. My breath mingled with hers, hot and uneven. In the charged silence, desire and dread entwined like lethal vines. Her eyes held mine; a precipice we hovered over, reckless and mesmerized.

Our mouths met. Desperate. Hungry.

Her lips, warm and yielding, contrasted brutally with the coldness I'd become. Her pulse beat under her skin. A maddening rhythm I felt against my own lips, on her neck, everywhere. It was too much.

"Alice..." I murmured into the kiss, voice lost to growl. My fangs ached, pressing sharp against my lip. The primal urge roared, drowning thought. I felt myself teetering, balance between beast and...whatever I'd been, precarious.

My throat ached, fangs pressing against my lip, hungry for the taste of her life. The burning within me roared for satiation. I struggled to keep my voice low, words distorted by the growing beast. "Alice... I might not... I might not be able to stop."

She felt it too – her breath quickened, body taut with tension. Fear sharpened her scent, yet she didn't pull away. "Then don't... dont stop," she whispered against my mouth, words fractured by passion and terror.

The burning eclipsed reason. My control shattered. My lips trailed to her neck, open, hungry. Her pulse thrummed, audible to my sharpened senses – a drumbeat of mortality taunting me. Alice's gasp mingled with my own sound – feral, wordless.

My control shredded like paper in a storm. The burning eclipsed reason.

My fangs pierced her throat.

Warmth flooded my mouth. The burning quelled momentarily, satiated by her gift...her sacrifice.

Her life essence poured into me.

"Damon...no." A soft plea, her breath whispering against my skin before her body went limp against mine, her hands falling away like wilted petals.

And I drank.

With the darkness closing in, the world narrowing to this act, this hunger...

I drank...

The kiss had been a precipice. We'd fallen. Now Alice lay against me, vulnerable, mortal...dying. I felt her pulse weaken, her warmth seeping into me.

When I finally stopped, pulling back with a grotesque slowness, Alice lay crumpled, her eyes glassy, unseeing. The silence afterward was profound, oppressive. I stared at her, horror creeping in – too late.

"Damon?" Her name was a hollow echo in my mind. What had I done?

The night seemed darker still, suffocating. I stood, remnants of her blood on my lips, feeling... empty? Sated, yet abysmal. The burning had receded, but at what cost?

Alice lay still. Dead.

My gaze lingered on her form, a creeping realization: in quenching one thirst, I'd drowned another – whatever humanity lingered in me.
