The Girls And The Amulet
I started writing this story years and years ago when I was a little kid for me and my best friend so its very near and dear to my heart and may be published soon.
Water. Something about it just made them smile. Something about it just felt so personal, so welcoming, so at home. Even when it was slamming against the shore, letting us all know that it could and would wash away our whole city if we messed with it.
Yet even though it would warn people of this, they would still mess with it. They would still trust it. By doing that, they gave the water their life and let it choose how to use it. Whether it be favorable or not.
These people trusted the water with all they had. They trusted it not to sweep them away like it had thousands of their piers. Trusted it not to hurt them but to give them a life and a purpose. As long as they left the water alone and unharmed, it did just that. It gave the people a life, supplying food for families and giving them a way of life. It gave families a place to enjoy their time together. But it also gave a person a place to go if they couldn’t handle life anymore and wished to leave.
It could be loving, angry, merciful, so many things, or nothing at all. You could never silence the water, though. You can’t bribe it to keep your secrets, either. Anything you tell it will resurface one way or another. Be it a message in a bottle or blood floating on the surface, it will not shield you from your wrongdoings but will protect you if you have done nothing to it.
This can make the water hated. One of the most hated things there is because according to people, it will do things for no reason. Wash away a town or even a person. It will cause only pain, people will say. It can do no good to anyone who comes near it.
Stay away from the water, children family members will say as the young boys and girls stare out at the water as it washes into the beach and back out again. Their curiosity will eventually lead them to ignore the words of warning they had been told, and they will creep towards the edge of the water, reaching down to touch it. The cool water will hit their fingers and toes, making them giggle and laugh at the marvelous sensation.
They will look around to make sure no one is there before taking a step closer and closer until they can feel the water soaking their clothes. They’ll creep closer, not hearing the cries of their mothers and fathers as their children disappear beneath the surface of the water.
The children don’t notice; all they notice is the beautiful creature that swims towards them with a smile on its face. The creature will swim towards them, shaking its head lightly, cup the child’s cheek, and say a few words. It will slowly swim the child back to shore with a kiss to the cheek and watch as its parents sweep it up off the sand.
The creature will nod at the sobbing parents before slowly disappearing back into the water. The children will soon forget about this creature but forever wonder where the little mark on their cheek came from, as neither they nor their parents ever remember where it came from or when it formed.
The creature will continue to watch the shore, protecting any of the children that get a little too curious for their own good. While the water may be okay with the children coming in and never coming back up, the creatures in it disagree. The creatures will be punished for it some day, but for now, keeping children safe is what matters the most to them.
Let me know if you like it and want more.
