1. Down the Hole

How did I get here? A make believe land. A kingdom in peril. And a naked monarch on a bed in front on me. Well, far be it from me to know how one ends up in Wonderland… but I sure did.

—૮꒰ ˶• ༝ •˶꒱ა—

It was another typical day at my office job. I work alone and don't really interact with any of my co-workers. Just tap away my life at the keyboard. Everyone's dream right? The point is, my life was not complicated by any means. Work. Sleep. Occasional work out, gaming or reading. But nothing of worth. Just an average life.

I had a few friends, but rarely see them anymore these days. Growing older, getting married and/or having kids. When it comes to myself in the romance department, well, I've kinda given up on that for now. I don't know if maybe I'm not interesting enough, bad in bed, or considered a loser to society. Hell. Could be all of the above. Maybe some day I'll have something to offer, but right now, I'm just not sure what.

My lunch break came up and I went out to the local park. It was a short daily walk that I often did for my breaks. Id go there and sit down and mostly watch nature, although running into people was bound to happen too. But not today.

After finishing a little thrown together sandwich, I got up off a park bench where I saw a white rabbit across from me in the grass. It's not uncommon to see rabbits, but an albino looking one was unique, so I followed it around a tree thinking I could snap a photo of it. Around the corner I went, holding my phone, trying to be sneaky, when the ground gave out and I fell.

And that's it. The last fucking thing I remember before my life got so much worse… or better? I really haven't decided. But maybe you can be the judge of that.

I remember falling and then waking up on my back in a forest. As I got up and took a look around, I knew something was… weird.

Half the forest looked to be dying, some of it in ashes, while the other half seemed vibrant with life. It even seemed the flowers were singing… yes, singing. I didn't even recognize most of the plant life. But I've seen enough movies and read enough books to know, I've been transported to some other world.

What a bunch of nonsense! A bunch of shit! Not that my life meant much before this.

But now it can be what ever I want it to be. That's how these things go right? Or so I thought...

I chose the non-charred side of the forest and began wandering about, but I quickly found that nothing was helping me find a path or a way out of the damn forest. Of course I'm lost. It's a different world, but my sense of direction was already fucked in the real world. And so, I wandered on, figuring going in the same direction would lead me somewhere. Eventually…

I was getting sluggish from walking through the forest. Going up and over hills, running into branches and many other terrain obstacles. Then, I came to a stop when I heard a rustling in front of me coming. Some bushes shook and parted as a woman emerged.

She was in shiny silver armor from head to toe with a very sharp looking sword drawn and pointed right at me, “Don't move! You are in the, in MY forest. A dangerous place to be right now. Even if there wasn't a monster afoot. Who are you and what are you doing here?”

While I mostly understood all of that she was a little muffled from the helmet she was wearing.

“Um, I'm…”

Oh, this is my moment to be someone else! Need a cool name. Who do I wanna be? Uh…

“I'm Thaddeus Knight,” I proclaimed proudly, trying to come up with something cool on the spot.

Yeah, that's it. What a fucking chad!

“Knight? You're no knight of this land. However, to be named after a knight you must have good lineage of some sort. Although, you hardly seem prepared for a fight.”

This chick was babbling. Lineage? I was just thinking fantasy and then like… fuck Knight was stupid. Where the hell did Thaddeus come from too?

“What do you mean?” I questioned, as I snapped back to what was going on.

She waved her sword up and down at me.

“Ugh! This damn thing,” she said reaching up and pulling off the helmet and throwing it on the ground. Her hair unfurled and dropped down past her shoulders. It was half red on one side and half black on the other, “Your garb seems useless for any sort of battle.”

Oh… I just realized, I'm still wearing my stupid work clothes. Probably not a norm here, but its just a white button up shirt and black pants. Then I looked back at her, decked out in armor before catching her face and really looking.

She had to be around my age. About mid twenties. And she was much cuter with the helmet off. Reminded me of those hot goth girls with her red and black lipstick that seemed to match her hair, but her face was pale white with powder-like makeup. I didn't want to come off as an idiot knowing nothing about this land, but I did in fact know nothing.

So, what was I to do? Lie. Obviously.

“I had regular uh, armor myself, but I uh. Took a nap and it seems to have disappeared at some point.”

“Some kind of warrior you must be, to be able to sleep in this forest,” she scoffed and rolled her eyes, “Either way, you're still trespassing and it's still dangerous here. I haven't the time nor the patience to deal with you.”

“I didn't know, I'm sorry. I've been lost awhile.”

Our conversation was interupted as there was an echoing screech. Loud. Close.

“I can forgive it just this once. It's near and any attempt to flee will just get you, I, or both of us killed. Too many things have been lost already.”

She reached behind her back and pulled out another sword that I didn't even see and then tossed it to me. I, of course, caught it by the hilt like a champ.

“Wait… what's going on?” I wondered.

“We have a beast to slay.”
