Chapter One

There is a girl named Anna, she has chestnut brown hair, she is wearing a pastel blue dress with a brown belt, beaded sandals that have a bow on it and the beads are white like the bow the sandals are a sandpaper color, her hair is up in a waterfall braid in a ponytail, and she has on a brown purse that carries all her school things. Bella who has red velvet hair, her ears pierced, is in a white shirt, black jeans, a red and black flannel tied around her waist, and is wearing black all-star converse.

One day something terrible happened. Bella is reckless and Anna is to perfect. Bella asked Anna if Bella and her wanted to race to school on their bikes. “Sure.” Anna replied happy as can be. By the time Bella got down by Anna they both started to cross the crosswalk. Then their whole world turned upside down…

An orange Camaro going 70 blindsided them. The person in the car is Bella’s boyfriend. He was about to drive away when he saw Bella lying on the ground, and he immediately calls 911. The dispatcher asked, “What happened?” “I just hit my girlfriend and her friend! They just appeared out of nowhere, I need you to get here immediately! I don’t know how long they’ll hold out!”

“Where are you?”

“Well, I’m on Route 44 and Montgomery Avenue.”

“Have you been drinking?”

“No, I haven’t been drinking.” he lied. The police and the paramedics showed up on the scene. They say Anna is unconscious and Bella is barely holding on.

The children’s hospital is bright, colorful, and has a strong scent of bleach. Bella is in a coma with a severed back and a broken arm; she is now paralyzed from the waist down. A few hours later Anna is awake. The doctor comes in tells her she just has a minor concussion and nothing major, in three hours she will be discharged. Three hours later Anna is discharged. Just as she was about to go through those glass doors, she collapsed. Her brain had swollen and she had to be put in a medically induced coma. Thirty minutes later her heart rate and oxygen levels start dropping, putting her into v-fib. A nurse rushes in and starts C.P.R and then starts to shock her, but it was too late she already is passed on.

2 weeks later Bella wakes up and finds out her reckless boyfriend was drinking, and he wasn’t twenty-one yet he was only 16. She found out that he went to jail for underage drinking and speeding, and that parole will be in a month. Bella does physical therapy to get the muscles in her arm moving, but she won’t walk ever again; after physical therapy she goes back to her room and she smells the greasy pizza and fresh fruit that’s for lunch. After she is done eating the nurse comes in with two paramedics and says, “They’re here to take you to rehab.” Bella said with sarcasm, “Oh joy.”

Rehab was bright colored with neon green and golden yellow paint on the walls. It smelled of fish and chips and a hint of bleach. Bella thought to herself “This smells just like the hospital.” My mom checked me in; a nurse grabbed the stretcher from the paramedics. My mom was in blue jeans, a coral blouse, and black flats, with a Vera Bradley cross body, black flower earrings, and had dirty blonde hair. The nurse took me to my big room and my very own hospital bed. Bella says to herself “Oh my gosh, it is so tacky!” It had railings on the side of it and it just clashed with the neon green and golden yellow. There were other people, which made me disappointed. We were allowed to decorate our own space so I had my mom get me a coral bed set and two memory foam pillows, at least I asked nicely.

It’s a fresh start for Bella, she is at rehab now and is becoming more independent. At physical therapy, she does her therapy for 2 hours a day helping her become more independent. The physiotherapist suggests to get a service dog so Bella’s mom looks into it and discovers the rehab facility has a service dog house and shelter right on campus. Bella’s mom suggested to Bella that they go check it out. When Bella sees all the dogs, she told her mom that she wanted a service dog to be more independent. Her mom is glad because she wants to see a smile on her daughter’s face, so they start the process of getting a service dog. They finally find the perfect dog named Princess. Princess has a luscious, golden coat. Bella immediately falls in love with Princess.

Bella lives in Winterbrook, Illinois, with her mom and dad. Her dad works late nights, but when Bella was in a coma he was off work and loved her so much. Bella is ready to conquer the day, her first day out of rehab and back to highschool. The high school was dubbed Winterbrook the town was named after the founder’s horse Winter. The founder was William Areheart Bolen, he was born in 1800’s only lived 25 years. People started living in the town on June, 14th, 1818. The hallways were painted in muted greens, blues, and purples. The hallways were big but were always crowded. The cafeteria was called the commons. Bella couldn’t sit with her friends because there was no wheelchair ramp and the tables weren’t wheelchair accessible, so she ate lunch in her next class.

Bella’s first day back to school her mother has a meeting to accommodate her needs. Bella asked to have her service dog with her at all times and if allowed to leave early for the next class each period. “Anything else?” a staff member asked, “Um… Do I have to do physical education?” Bella replied “Yes you have to, but only physical therapy counts for your physical education.” “Do you have a place where I can do my physical therapy?” “No, we don’t have a place for you to do physical therapy, but you will be sent off campus.”

“But next year you will have a place for me to do my physical therapy? If not, I am not going to this school!” “

We will do fundraisers and bake sales, to build a physical therapy center for people like you.”

“PEOPLE LIKE ME! Mom can you please take me back home and can we find a new school?!” Bella was enraged with this offence, and would’ve stomped out had she been able to. Bella leaves the meeting feeling like an outcast.
