Chapter 1 – The One That Got Away

New York City was loud. Too loud for lingering thoughts.

Evelyn Carter liked it that way.

She thrived on the chaos—the honking taxis, the rush-hour footsteps, the endless chatter of people who didn’t care about her past. New York was a city of distractions, and that was exactly what she needed.

Her heels clicked against the polished floors of the event hall as she walked in, head high, posture perfect. Tonight was important. A high-profile charity gala hosted by Harper & Blake Publishing, the company she worked for, and she was expected to impress. Smile. Shake hands. Network. That was the plan.

Except Evelyn knew herself too well. No matter how well she masked it, a small part of her still felt out of place among the elite. She was an editor, not a socialite. She preferred words over people. If she had a choice, she’d be home curled up with a manuscript, not sipping overpriced champagne and pretending to care about who donated the most money.

But she didn’t have a choice.

The moment she stepped further inside, Olivia—her best friend and Harper & Blake’s marketing director—was at her side. “Breathe, Ev. You look like you’d rather be anywhere but here.”

Evelyn exhaled. “That obvious?”

Olivia grinned, nudging her playfully. “Only to me. Everyone else sees a picture-perfect editor ready to charm the room.”

Evelyn let out a soft chuckle. “Great. Let’s hope no one expects small talk.”

Before Olivia could respond, a waiter passed by, offering glasses of champagne. Evelyn grabbed one and took a small sip, scanning the crowd. CEOs, investors, celebrities—this gala had drawn the city’s elite. A perfect place to make connections.

Then she saw him.

And for the first time that night, the noise in the room faded.

Ryan Bennett.

He stood near the bar, casually talking to a group of executives, looking completely at ease in a tailored black suit. His dark brown hair was slightly tousled, just as it always had been, like he’d run his fingers through it too many times. He was taller than she remembered—or maybe it was just the distance between them now.

He laughed at something one of the men said, and the sound hit her like a memory she wasn’t ready for.

It had been four years since she last saw him. Four years since he walked away. And now, as if fate had a twisted sense of humor, he was here, in her city, at her event, standing just a few feet away.

“Ev?” Olivia’s voice pulled her back to reality. “You okay?”

Evelyn’s grip on the champagne glass tightened slightly. She forced herself to breathe. She had moved on. She was over this. Over him.

So why did it feel like the ground had just shifted beneath her feet?

“I’m fine,” she said, voice steady.

But then, as if he could sense her, Ryan’s gaze lifted across the room—and their eyes met.

His expression froze, surprise flickering across his face before something deeper settled in. Recognition. Regret. Something she couldn’t—or wouldn’t—name.

Evelyn’s pulse kicked up, but she refused to look away first. Not this time.

She squared her shoulders, lifted her chin, and did the only thing she could think of.

She smiled—a polite, indifferent smile—before turning away.

Let him be the one to chase this time.
