Prologue: The Oath of the Knights

Citadel of Gozo, 1291

The flames flickered against the limestone walls, casting long shadows over the assembled knights. Rain hammered the ancient stones above, washing away the blood of the last defenders. Jerusalem had fallen, Acre had crumbled, and now, the Holy Grail—if it ever truly existed—was to be hidden once more.

Grand Master Guillaume de Villaret, clad in the crimson surcoat with the white cross of the Knights Hospitaller, raised a hand. Before him, six of his most trusted men knelt, their armor battered, their eyes hollow from battle.

“You have seen what greed does to men,” de Villaret intoned. “You have seen faith twisted into ambition, devotion turned to conquest. The Grail is not a weapon, nor a relic to be paraded. It is a symbol of something greater.”

The knights remained silent as their master gestured to the hidden chamber beneath them, its entrance barely visible in the flickering torchlight. Inside, within an unmarked reliquary, the Grail lay in its newest resting place, far from the clutches of those who would misuse it.

“Swear now,” de Villaret commanded. “Swear to guard its secret, to protect it from the unworthy, until the end of time.”

Each knight pressed a hand to their chest and bowed their heads.

“We swear.”

And so, the Holy Grail was hidden—vanishing into the annals of history.
