Chapter 1:THE FIRST GLANCE
**Chapter 1: The First Glance**
Katrina Mia Kalogera sat alone on a hard plastic chair in the bustling South Carolina airport, her heart heavy and her mind racing. Just hours ago, she had left home, storming out after yet another explosive fight between her parents. The chaos of their arguments echoed in her mind, and the tears she thought she had dried were threatening to spill over again.
“I’m done listening to you!” her mother had shouted, frustration lacing every word. “You have no idea what’s good for you!”
“Then maybe you should’ve thought about that before dragging me into this mess!” Katrina had snapped back, feeling a surge of resentment. She was tired of being ignored and unsupported by parents who seemed more focused on their own lives than on hers. They had come home one day, announcing that they wanted to marry her off to some guy she didn’t even know. It was as if they had forgotten all her dreams and aspirations, dismissing them without a second thought.
That was the moment everything broke inside her. The feeling of being unloved and unvalued washed over her like a tidal wave. She grabbed her bag and propelled herself out the door, tears streaming down her cheeks as she thought, *They don’t care about me.*
Now, here she was, waiting for a flight to Los Angeles—a city that felt like both an escape and an unknown abyss. She glanced at the departure board, her heart racing as she realized time was slipping away. She needed to board soon.
In an effort to distract herself from the turmoil within, Katrina fished out her travel mug filled with coffee from her bag. She took a sip, hoping the warmth would soothe her nerves. As she stood up to grab her things and head toward the gate, disaster struck.
Lost in thought about leaving everything behind—the vibrant streets of Greece where her heart belonged and the memories made in South Carolina—she collided with someone walking past. The travel mug slipped from her grasp and tipped over, splattering coffee all over the front of a tall stranger’s shirt.
“Oh no! I’m so sorry!” Katrina exclaimed, panic rising in her chest as she quickly reached for napkins from a nearby café counter.
The man barely flinched as he looked down at his now coffee-stained shirt. His expression was cold and unreadable, eyes sharp and piercing like ice. “Great,” he said flatly, wiping at the dark stain with little success.
“I really didn’t mean to! Here—let me help you,” Katrina stammered, handing him napkins while feeling heat creep into her cheeks.
He took them without a word, his annoyance palpable as he continued to dab at his shirt. “It’s fine,” he replied curtly, not meeting her gaze.
Katrina felt a mix of embarrassment and frustration bubbling inside her. “I can buy you a drink or something to make up for it,” she offered hesitantly.
He finally looked up at her with an expression that could freeze fire. “I don’t have time for this,” he said coldly before turning away from her completely.
The rejection stung more than she expected. She stood there for a moment, feeling small and foolish as he walked away without another word. It was just coffee—yet it felt like another reminder of how lost she was in this world.
Taking a deep breath to steady herself, Katrina gathered her things and made her way toward Gate 27. As she walked, thoughts raced through her mind: Did I really just spill coffee on someone? Why did I even offer to help?
Settling into a seat near the gate, Katrina pulled out her notebook filled with poems and dreams—her only means of escape from the chaos of life around her. She opened it to a blank page but found herself unable to write anything coherent; instead, all that came to mind was that cold stranger who had brushed off their brief encounter so easily.
But maybe that was just how life went—filled with unexpected moments that didn’t lead anywhere meaningful. With one last sigh and determination welling up inside of her, Katrina began scribbling down thoughts about change and new beginnings as the boarding announcement echoed through the terminal.
She glanced back toward where he had been standing moments before but found only empty space now. A part of her wondered what it would have been like if they had shared something more than an awkward encounter—a fleeting connection amid all the chaos around them.
For now, though, all she had was this moment—the start of something new in L.A., even if it meant leaving behind everything familiar.
