BOOKISH ENCOUTER

The library was quiet that afternoon, save for the occasional rustle of pages and the faint hum of the air conditioning. She sat behind the front desk, lost in the pages of an old Tamil classic, when the sound of hesitant footsteps made her glance up. A man stood near the recommendation shelf, his fingers hovering over the spines of books, as if unsure which one to pick.

He was tall, with neatly pressed trousers and a collared shirt, a leather satchel slung over his shoulder. His dark eyes, framed by a pair of rectangular glasses, held a look of deep concentration. Every now and then, he adjusted them absently, as though lost in thought.

She observed him for a moment before deciding to approach. “Can I help you find something?”

He turned, slightly startled, before offering a small, polite smile. “Ah, yes. I was looking for a good Tamil book to read. Something classic, but engaging.”

“Are you looking for fiction or non-fiction?” she asked, tilting her head curiously.

He hesitated before replying, “I teach Tamil literature, so I’ve read most of the well-known works. But I want something that offers a fresh perspective.”

A Tamil professor. That explained his scholarly demeanor. She nodded, impressed. “Then you must already be familiar with the classics—Kamban, Bharathiyar, Pudhumaipithan?”

His face lit up. “Of course. Kamban’s poetry is unparalleled, and Bharathiyar’s words still feel revolutionary. Pudhumaipithan, though—his satire and bold storytelling were ahead of his time.”

Her lips curved into a smile. “I completely agree. Have you read ‘Samooga Thoondu’? It’s one of my favorites from Pudhumaipithan.”

His eyes gleamed with enthusiasm. “Yes, the way he critiques society so sharply, with humor and irony—it’s brilliant.”

She nodded, pleased. It wasn’t every day she met someone who could talk about Tamil literature with such passion. “If you’re looking for something engaging yet fresh, I’d suggest ‘Ponniyin Selvan.’ Kalki’s storytelling is immersive, and the historical detailing is meticulous.”

He took the book from her hands, flipping through the pages with a nostalgic smile. “A classic. I’ve read it before, but it’s been years.”

She leaned against the shelf. “Or, if you want something more modern, Perumal Murugan’s ‘Madhorubagan’ is thought-provoking and beautifully written.”

He nodded thoughtfully. “I admire Perumal Murugan’s work. His writing is raw and fearless.” He glanced at her, curiosity in his gaze. “What about you? Do you have a favorite modern writer?”

She thought for a moment. “Sujatha. His narratives blend science, philosophy, and thriller elements so effortlessly. And his characters feel real.”

He chuckled. “Ah, Sujatha! His ability to balance intellect with emotion is unmatched. His dialogues alone make his stories unforgettable.”

She found herself enjoying the conversation more than she expected. He wasn’t just another reader; he was someone who truly appreciated the depth of Tamil literature.

“I’m Ilavenil,” she offered. “I’m the librarian here.”

He smiled slightly. “I’m Aaruran.”

As he tucked ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ under his arm, he nodded to her. “Thanks again for the recommendation. Maybe I’ll see you around?”

Ilavenil watched him leave, an odd feeling settling in her chest. Perhaps it was the way he spoke about literature, or the way he listened—fully engaged, as if every word mattered.

She shook her head, returning to her desk. It was just another conversation in the library, she told herself. But then, why did it feel different this time?
