A Sweet Lie
Sitting in the corner I scan the room, a sea of faces, faces that are smiling, chatting, drinking.
They’re happy.
How are they happy? my husbands gone..
I guess they don’t love him like I do, but.. they should still care right?.
( Plates crashing )
I swivel my head to see the commotion unfolding. Food and glasses smashing at the young servers feet, a woman with furious eyes scanning the area until they land on mine.
Storming over, she stops before me “ you won’t get away with this, just because you’re his wife doesn’t mean anything. “
Is this woman delusional?.
“ I’ve been with him since day one and I won’t be cut out like this, I want what he promised me.!“
I stand with a stone cold stare, looking at her as I ask “ And that would be.? “
“ Everything Henry promised, I get everything. “
I walk towards the doors to the courtyard and gesture for her to follow, as I close the doors behind us.
“ What makes you think I would give you anything? You really believe this was all his don’t you? “ I questioned, irritation clearly evident in my voice.
“ Of course it’s his, you never worked! he always complained about you mooching off of him. “
I tilt my head forward laughing. “Oh you think so? Everything he ever had I gave him, he may not have known it, but I do. Theres alot of things my husband never knew about me, however there’s alot you’ll find out if you keep up with this nonsense. “
Stepping back slightly with a worried look before a false confidence takes a hold of her once again.
“ You dont know who I am do you.? I’m Aria Bellows and I’m not to be messed with.”
losing control of my anger I pull a gun from my bra holster, holding it to her head, tilting mine to the side slightly as she raises her hands.
Letting out a rough breath I had been holding in laugh solemnly before retorting “ And I’m a widow with nothing left to lose. “
Looking at her I see the confidence she first held is gone and the worried look in her eyes has once again returned.
I smile “ not so confident now are we? like I said before, theres alot you’ll find out if you keep up with this nonsense, so I suggest you stop while your ahead. Dont you? “ I questioned.
Aria nods her head furiously with wide eyes, as she starts taking a few steps back before dropping her hands and running out of the gate.
“ Pussy ” I say as I drop my arm and crouch down sighing into my knees as I realise the life I once had is now over, just a memory, a sweet lie.
Standing slowly, I look at the gun in my hands remembering how Henry had brought it for me on my 21st birthday. He said he would feel better knowing I had it for emergencies or for when he was going out of town on business.
“ Baby I want you to have this, so I wont have to worry so much when I’m away. “
Hearing the words play over in my head sickens me as I shake the memory from my thoughts, before throwing the gun into the bushes.
Turning around and taking a deep breath in, I slowly let it out before walking back into the house and ploping myself down in a chair.
Scanning the room once more, I see all of the same smiling faces yet I no longer feel anything towards them, just numbness.
Hours pass by in what feels like minutes as the final guests are giving me their last condolences whilst simultaneously praying for my new solem life at the same time.
As the last guests leave and the front door finally closes, the sound of silence envelops the house. It’s eerie, yet calm and I’m suddenly unsure of what to do with myself.
After making up my mind that I will no longer be sleeping in this house, I started to search for my purse, phone and keys, locating them before making my way towards the garage.
As I open the door sliding my hand across the wall flicking the overhead lights on before walking over to my car, with the click clack of heels echoing across the concrete flooring.
Opening the door and lowering myself into my bmw, I pull down the sun visor to see the photo of Henry and I that I had always kept there before plucking it from its place, balling it up and tossing it into the back seat.
I take a deep breath and scream, letting out the day’s frustration before pulling myself together as quick as I fell apart.
I push the ignition hearing the engine roar to life, pressing the clicker for the garage door when it starts peeling away from the concrete. Shifting into drive before taking off down the driveway heading into the city.
