Chapter 1: A Day to Remember
Sophia gripped the sides of the hospital bed, her body trembling as another contraction rolled through her like a tidal wave. Pain lanced through her, so sharp it left her breathless. She clenched her jaw, trying not to cry out, but a whimper escaped her lips.
“Breathe, Sophia,” the nurse said gently, her voice a soothing contrast to the chaos inside Sophia’s body. “Deep breaths in through your nose, out through your mouth. You’re doing great.”
Sophia nodded weakly, her face flushed and damp with sweat. The nurse dabbed a cool cloth against her forehead, and for a moment, the small kindness distracted her from the pain.
But then her eyes drifted to the phone in her hand. It felt heavier with every unanswered text message she sent.
She glanced at the screen again, her heart sinking as she saw nothing but the time - two hours had passed since she first tried to reach Ryan. Two hours of laboring alone, waiting for the man who was supposed to be her rock on the most important day of their lives.
Her thumb hovered over the keyboard before she typed out another message, her fingers trembling:
Ryan, it’s happening. I’m in labor. I need you here. Please come.
She hit send and stared at the screen, willing it to light up with his response. Seconds ticked by. Then minutes. Nothing.
The nurse’s soft voice broke through her thoughts. “Is someone coming to be with you, sweetheart?”
Sophia hesitated, feeling a lump rise in her throat. “Yes,” she said quietly, though even she wasn’t sure it was true. “He’ll be here soon.”
“Good,” the nurse replied with a warm smile, adjusting the monitor on Sophia’s belly. “First babies like to take their time, so there’s still a chance he’ll make it before the big moment.”
Sophia forced a weak smile, but doubt gnawed at her. Ryan had always been unreliable, brushing off her concerns with excuses about work or his busy schedule. But today - today was supposed to be different.
Wasn’t it?
Nearly an hour later, Sophia lay slumped against the pillows, her body exhausted from the relentless contractions. She had stopped checking her phone, each unanswered message only deepening her frustration and fear. She stared blankly at the ceiling, her mind clouded with worry.
Just then, the door creaked open, and Ryan finally walked in. Relief surged through her, but it was quickly overshadowed by confusion.
“Where have you been?” she asked, her voice weak but laced with anger.
Ryan looked uncomfortable, his eyes darting around the room as he set down the overnight bag she had packed weeks ago. “Sorry, babe. Got caught up with some stuff.”
“Some stuff?” Sophia repeated, incredulous. “I’ve been texting you for hours. I thought...” She stopped herself, biting back the tears threatening to spill.
Ryan ran a hand through his hair and gave her a sheepish smile. “It’s been a crazy day at work. You know how it is.”
Her mouth fell open, but before she could respond, he reached for the car seat he’d awkwardly wedged under his arm. “I brought the stuff you asked for. See? Got everything covered.”
“Ryan, this isn’t about the bag!” she snapped, her frustration boiling over. “I’m in labor. Our daughter is about to be born, and you’re acting like this is just another errand.”
He flinched at her tone, his face hardening slightly. “Look, I’m here now, aren’t I?”
Sophia stared at him, stunned by his dismissive attitude. Before she could say more, his phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his expression shifting as he read the screen.
“I have to take this,” he said quickly, stepping toward the door.
“Ryan, wait...”
“I’ll be right back,” he said over his shoulder, already halfway out the door.
Sophia watched him leave, her heart sinking like a stone.
The hours blurred together after that. The contractions came faster, each one stealing her breath and leaving her trembling. Ryan didn’t return.
The nurse stayed by her side, offering quiet encouragement and holding her hand when the pain became unbearable. “You’re so strong, Sophia,” she said. “Just a little longer now.”
Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the doctor announced it was time. Sophia gathered the last of her strength, pushing through the pain with every ounce of willpower she had left.
And then, suddenly, the room was filled with the sound of a baby’s cries.
The tears that spilled from Sophia’s eyes were no longer from pain but from pure, overwhelming joy.
“It’s a girl,” the doctor said, holding up the tiny, wriggling newborn.
Sophia reached out, her hands trembling as the nurse placed the baby in her arms. “Hi, sweetheart,” she whispered, her voice breaking. “Welcome to the world.”
The baby’s cries softened as Sophia held her close, brushing a kiss against her delicate forehead. She was perfect -tiny fingers, button nose, a head full of dark hair.
“You’re everything,” Sophia murmured. “Everything I’ve ever wanted.”
The next day, Sophia sat propped up in bed, cradling her newborn daughter - Lila, she had decided to name her. The name felt right, soft and beautiful, just like the little girl in her arms.
The doctor had explained that Lila had mild newborn jaundice, a condition that required her to stay under phototherapy lights for a few days. It was common, he assured her, and nothing to worry about. But the news had still added to Sophia’s exhaustion and stress.
She stared at her phone again, scrolling through the string of unanswered texts she had sent Ryan.
Lila is here. She’s beautiful. We’re staying in the hospital a few more days. Please call me.
No response.
Sophia let out a shaky breath, tears welling in her eyes. She felt so alone. The man she had trusted to stand by her had vanished when she needed him most.
The nurse entered the room, interrupting her thoughts. “How are you feeling, Sophia?” she asked kindly.
“Tired,” Sophia admitted. “But Lila’s doing well, so that’s all that matters.”
The nurse smiled. “You’re doing a great job. She’s lucky to have a mom like you.”
Sophia’s heart swelled at the words, even as a pang of sadness lingered. Lila deserved more than just her. She deserved a family - a father who cared.
That evening, as Sophia rocked Lila to sleep, she allowed herself to think about what might come next. Ryan’s disappearance, his cold indifference - it wasn’t something she could ignore anymore.
A single tear slipped down her cheek as she whispered to her sleeping daughter, “It’s just you and me now, sweetheart. But I promise, I’ll do everything I can to give you the life you deserve.”
She kissed Lila’s forehead, her resolve hardening. Sophia didn’t know what the future held, but one thing was clear: she couldn’t count on Ryan.
Not anymore.
