A Teasing Glimpse at a Great Epic
"What a teaser--a brief, yet quicksilver chapter full of old legends and horrors, told in a very concise, yet poetic voice. There's almost no slack in the story at all: it starts at a breakneck pace and only quickens after the first paragraphs. While I've read many fantasy stories that conjure up a similar world and open in a similar manner, I think this author has two things going for him/her: (a) the writing is superb--descriptive without being boring, yet full of careful detail; and (b) the world is believable enough to throw yourself into without being entirely explained (the fault of many fantasy stories in their first chapter). We get slivers of legends and history, but it doesn't all make sense just yet. And that's as it should be. This is a wonderfully bite-sized piece of a (I hope) longer narrative and should entice anyone who loves epic fantasy to start reading "Windmane." And like those readers, I'm curious to see where the author takes this. Keep posting!"
