Reya did not answer immediately. She held the photograph between her fingers, tracing the edge as if it might cut her if she pressed too hard. The man in the picture stared back at her, frozen in time, unaware that his life had already begun to unravel.
"You make it sound cruel," she said finally, her voice low, almost careful.
The man across from her leaned back. "It is cruel. That's the point."
Reya's grip tightened, just slightly. Not enough to crease the photograph, but enough to remind herself that it was real. That the past was real. That what had been taken from her was real.
"He won't see you coming," he continued, watching her the way people watched a slow disaster.
She looked up then. Her expression was calm, practiced, empty of drama.
"Good," she said.
A pause. "Because I don't intend to stop until I get back everything he took from me."
