Chapter 1
I look down at my wrist, to check the time. Aunt May should have been here already to come pick me up.
Frantically I start looking around the airport, for her.
"Maddison Sawyer?" A male's voice called out to me. Confused, I spun around and was met with a very, very tall guy, whom I have never met before.
"Who's asking?" I asked and looked at the cardboard in his hands with my name on it. Scribbled in a very ugly handwriting, which I presume was his.
"Hunter, Hunter Sawyer." He reached out his left hand for me to shake. Hesitantly I grabbed his and firmly shook his hand.
"Quite a grip you have there. Do you work out?" He chuckled and sets my hand free.
"A little. You're a Sawyer? I know everyone in the Sawyer clan..." All thanks to my mother. Mentally I rolled my eyes at her who had forced me to every single one of gatherings, whether it be for charity or just a plain brunch. "except you. Are you a distant cousin or what?" I asked.
"You're right about the cousin part. I am your Aunt May's adopted son. We never got to meet because she told me that..." I cut him off and nod my head, because I know the very reason why we never met him. "Yeah I know why. No need to explain. So, Hunter. I'm sorry if this is going to seem a bit rude but I need to send a text to someone. Then we can go. That okay?"
He nodded and smiled.
I got a feeling something was off about this guy. I fished out my phone from my sweatpants and immediately texted aunt May.
Hey Aunt. I finally made it. I'm at the airport. I thought that you would come to pick me up? What's the hold up?
She replied within seconds.
My son, Hunter will be there to pick you up. After he heard that his cousin Maddison are coming to visit, he offered to come pick you up.
Okay. See you soon. Can't wait to see you!!!
I pocketed my phone and gave Hunter my suitcase. "Here, cuz." I said and rolled the suitcase to his side. He smiled.
I followed him out of the airport terminal. His car were parked outside. Sawyer money. I thought when I saw which brand it was. He drove a Porsche.
"Let's go cuz!" He said excitedly. I faked a smile, cause I was feeling uneasy. He made me really uncomfortable. I couldn't tell if his friendliness were sincere, or if he was faking it. "Yeah." I hummed.
On the ride I asked him a few questions.
"So you and my Aunt May. How did that happen?"
"She told me you were the most curious out of all the Sawyers. The nicest, kindest, and the sharpest tool in the box." He laughed and evaded my question. Maybe, just maybe he would not like to talk about it, because he does not like talking about himself and where he came from, or he's simply evading my question, cause he has something to hide. The uneasiness does not go away.
"So how old were you when she adopted you?" I asked.
"15 years old." He said. Unusual, I thought. Aunt May fawned over babies, and still do. So if she were to adopt, she would have adopted a baby, and not a teenager.
"How did you meet?"
"At the orphanage. Can I stop here? Mom asked me get a few things for her on the way back." He said and pulled over. He parked the car in front of the pharmacy. I did not wait long, because he came jogging with a bag in his hand. I took in his features. Blonde curls, tall with a slender figure. Brown eyes with a heart framed face.
" I wasn't long was I?"
I shook my head and smiled. "Not at all."
He took off and I silently watched as the town's buildings and shops pass us by in a blur.
I shot up in my seat, when he took a wrong turn. I know the road to Aunt Mary's house, and it most certainly was and is not down this street.
"Cuz? Where are we heading? I asked and tapped on his shoulder.
" To mom's." He said nonchalantly. Like I was going to believe that. This liar was taking me elsewhere.
" No, really, where are we going?" I asked with all seriousness in my voice. He looked at me for a brief moment and then back on road. "Like I said, to mom's. It's been a while since you were here. I get it that you forgot the road to her home." He chuckled, but it sounded forced.
"Out of the whole Sawyer clan, is she my favorite. It might have been 7 years ago that I was last here but I would never forget the road to her house. So where the heck are you taking me!" I yelled and grabbed the wheel.
The car started to swerve as we both fought over the steering wheel." You're going to kill us Maddison!" He yelled.
" Stop the car, you fake! " I yelled back at him.
The car came to an abrupt halt. Hunter looked at me with murderous intent. "I knew you were faking it! Who are you?!"
"Your sacrifice would mean so much to me. I can't die yet, and I most certainly cannot drag my mom into my shitty business, but you, I definitely can."
"What?"
Just then the passenger door flew open. Two men grabbed my arms and yanked me out of the car. My face got covered with a cloth. The stench of alcohol stung my nose. Hunter's last words to me were. "It's nothing personal." Then everything went black.
