Chapter 1

After a seemingly eternal day of school, I found myself walking through the halls almost half asleep.

“Woah there Brandi,” my gay ass older brother Will said. “You look like you’re bout’ to fall asleep there, girl!”

“I am,” I mumbled. Will laughed. “You look like you’ve had a long enough day. Would you like me to drive you home?”

I nearly started crying. “Oh my gosh. Please!”

“Alrighty. I’m gonna go find Jack. Meet me out back in the parking lot?” Will asked. “Sure,” I said drowsily. Jack was his “Best Friend,” and it looked like he would be coming home with us. ‘This car ride home might be longer than the school day,’ I thought.

I start to walk out back to the lot, but not before I get slammed into a locker.

“Dude! What the hell??” I yelled. There was a group of boys, a grade above, I assumed. Then, I realized it was some of Will’s friends.

“Oh my lord! Sorry Brandi!! We didn’t see you there.”

I grumbled. “It’s fine.” The stupid boys were shoving each other around in the hall and one of them had happened to hit me. Just my luck.

I start walking towards the exit, hoping I don’t get caught up in anything that prevents me from getting to the car, and soon enough I was outside. I nearly leaped with relief. The thought of sitting down made my eyes droop.

As I made my way to the car, I could hear Will and Jack coming outside behind me. I caught Will’s eye and made a signal towards the car. He nodded and unlocked the doors.

Will had a small, beat up, Chevy Malibu. I didn’t know if my bookbag would fit in the back seat so I popped open the trunk and slung it in.

By the time I'd opened the door of the car, Will and Jack were already inside. I sat myself down in the cramped backseat of Will’s car and pulled a piece of gum out from my pocket.

Smelling the minty scent, Jack asked for a piece. Reluctantly, I gave him one because, like, sharing sucks. Especially with gum and hair ties.

Will started the car and we were off. I counted every second until I got out of the car. If you were wondering, the number was 1,576. That’s nearly 26 minutes. Very long.

Normally, we would’ve dropped Jack off but I think he is staying over tonight. I honestly didn’t know. I’d zoned out counting and literally heard nothing but my thoughts.

As I got out of the car, I made my way towards the mailbox. It was my daily duty to bring any of the mail in. All I saw was bills, taxes, and more bills. My parents really need to start paying for things.

I stopped for a second and looked up at our house. It was light blue with a nice complementary white color for the trim. It has two stories and there are flower boxes in all of the windows. And then there are more flowers in the front and on the bushes, and in the back,  and on the lawn. Even the trees had flowers!! My Mom and sister are obsessed with gardening and my Dad is a professional landscaper. I guess you’d assume we’d have this many plants.

I strolled into my house, saying hi to my parents as I set the mail down on the dining table. Then, I hear Sherri call my name.

Sherri is my sister, and her real name is Sheridan. She’s one of those child geniuses. She skipped fifth grade and now she’s a ten year old in 6th grade, and since I’m older than her but closer in age than Will or Jack, she relies on me to help her with homework. This doesn’t happen that often because, uh, *cough cough* child genius

I groan and walk my way towards the living room. As soon as I walk in, I see her beaming at a piece of paper in her hands.

“Brandi!! Guess what I got on my paper!!” She screams excitedly.

I flinch because of the noise. My poor ears can’t take this abuse anymore. “Let me guess… an A?” Somehow, after I say that her cheeks expand even more.

“Nope!! I got an A+!! That’s 100! I got the highest grade in the class!!!”

I wasn’t surprised. She’d gotten high grades like this before. And sometimes she gets even more excited than the last. I don’t know how that happens.

I congratulate her and make my way upstairs.

‘In my room at last,’ I think.

My day sucked. And yes, I will tell you all about it because ranting is the only thing I am good at. Deal with it. #Persassy.

Well, actually, I have nothing to rant about. My day was just tiring in general. I think it was just the car ride that was insufferable. Earlier, I did in fact call my brother gay. Not to be mean, but because it’s facts. He’s definitely in the closet, but I think he and Jack are dating, or Will has a crush on him. They’re really close and it annoys me at how bad they are at hiding it.

I go to sit down on my hanging chair with a book. I love it there. I sit down in my chair all the time, and it’s especially nice for rainy days and sunsets since my room has a perfect view of it. It’s really relaxing. And on the plus side, my bed is right next to it so I can open it up on nice nights and listen to all the cars driving by and the police sirens.

Now, it’s time to read. Well, at least until dinner time.

After nearly 40 minutes of reading, I hear my mom call me down for dinner.

As I walk downstairs, I hear some rustling coming from Will’s room. I roll my eyes and keep walking.

My mom greets me once I reach the end of the stairs, “Hey, Brandi! Think you could help me set the table?”

“Sure!” I reply. I open up the cabinets and get out a few paper plates and set them on the island.

Then I go to sit down in the dining room.

I hear my brother and Jack start to head downstairs. They both looked a little disheveled. Perfect time to start teasing them.

“Hey boys, what were you doing up there?” I smirk, “In the bedroom?”

Both the boys go red.

I gasp, “I KNEW IT!” Will glares at me. “Knew what?”

I wiggle my eyebrows at him. “I think you know.” Then, to top it off, I blow him a kiss.

They both come to sit down at the table with me and then my dad asks, “Actually boys, what were you doing in there?” Jack makes a strangled noise, but Will covers it by saying, “We have a health project regarding work-outs.”

“What kind of work-outs?” I ask. But wait. Health ends in sophomore year and they were both juniors. I silently gasp. “You guys don’t-!” I didn’t get to finish before Jack snacks a hand on my mouth.

I frown at him. I didn’t get to say anything because my mom then walked in with our plates of food. Tonight we were having hamburgers! Yum.

After dinner, everyone was stuffed. Those burgers were exceptionally good today.

I thanked my mom for making the food and go to wash my plate and put it away. I then walk upstairs to my room and get ready for bed.

It was nice out so I decided to open up my window so I could hear the cars go by.

I start to change clothes and brush my teeth but something weird happens. I notice a mailman put a letter in our mailbox from my window. ‘Hm… I wonder what that could be.’ I think.

I’ll check the mailbox tomorrow after school because right now, I am tired af and want to sleep.

I turn off the lights in my room and take my medicine. Soon enough I can feel myself drifting to sleep.
