Turbulence Between the Rails

It was nearing dusk in Jogja. The golden hour cast a honeyed sheen over Tugu Station, the platform humming with murmurs and the distant clatter of metal wheels. Ramadan stood in linen trousers and a fitted black tee, his Coach crossbody bag slung low across his chest. Glasses perched on his nose, his gaze flicked between the crowd and the incoming train.



He always booked Executive class—it was just enough space, just enough quiet. But it wasn’t the comfort he waited for. It was something more unpredictable, something that stirred just below the skin.



That’s when Ardi appeared.



Military buzzcut. Olive duffel slung across one shoulder. Broad, sunburnt arms and that upright gait only soldiers seemed to perfect. His camouflage pants were tight at the thighs, cinched with a heavy belt. Eyes scanning the train car, until they landed—on him.



Ramadan caught the glance and smiled faintly.



“Dari Magelang, Mas?” he asked as Ardi stored his bag overhead.



“Iya. Tugas. Mau nengok istri sebentar di Jakarta,” Ardi replied, settling into the seat beside him.



There was a hint of weariness in his voice, but something else too—edge, maybe. Hunger disguised in authority.
