Chapter 1
Sparks in the Kitchen
The late afternoon sun spilled golden light across the Harper family’s backyard, casting long shadows over the picnic tables laden with potato salad, grilled corn, and Liam’s famous barbecue ribs. Laughter and the clink of glasses filled the air as Elise Harper, 25 and freshly returned from her graphic design gig in Boston, mingled with her parents’ friends and neighbors. It was the kind of summer gathering she’d grown up with—warm, chaotic, and steeped in the salty breeze of their coastal Maine town. But today, her senses were on edge, and she knew exactly why.
Nathan Cole.
Her brother Liam’s best friend since high school had just arrived, his broad shoulders filling out a faded gray T-shirt as he stepped out of his truck. The sight of him—rugged, with a firefighter’s build and a crooked smile that could melt steel—sent a jolt through her. She’d harbored a crush on him for years, a secret she’d buried under layers of teenage awkwardness and adult restraint. At 28, Nathan was no longer the lanky kid who’d crashed on their couch after late-night video game marathons. Now, he was a man—confident, weathered by his job, and dangerously attractive. And today, for the first time in months, he was here, close enough to touch.
Elise smoothed her sundress, her fingers trembling slightly as she pretended to adjust a plate of cookies. She’d caught his eye across the yard earlier, a fleeting glance that lingered too long, igniting something she couldn’t name. He’d nodded, that familiar half-smile tugging at his lips, before Liam dragged him off to help with the grill. She told herself to stay busy, to focus on the chatter of Aunt Margie recounting her latest knitting project, but her gaze kept drifting back to him.
The barbecue hit its stride as the sun dipped lower, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Kids darted around with sparklers, and her dad cracked open another round of beers. Elise excused herself, claiming she needed to refill the lemonade pitcher, and slipped into the house. The kitchen was a welcome reprieve—cooler, quieter, the hum of the refrigerator a soft counterpoint to the noise outside. She leaned against the counter, exhaling, trying to shake the heat pooling in her chest.
The door creaked open behind her, and she turned, expecting her mom or Liam. Instead, it was Nathan, his frame filling the doorway as he held an empty tray of ribs. “Liam sent me for more sauce,” he said, his voice low and rough, like he’d been shouting over the grill. His eyes locked with hers, and the air thickened, charged with an unspoken current.
“Oh, uh, it’s right here,” Elise stammered, reaching for the bottle on the counter. Her hand brushed his as she passed it over, and the contact sent a shiver up her spine. His fingers lingered, warm and calloused, and she froze, her breath catching.
“Thanks,” he murmured, setting the tray down but not stepping back. The space between them shrank, the kitchen suddenly too small, too intimate. She could smell the smoky scent of the grill on him, mixed with something uniquely Nathan—woodsy, masculine. Her heart pounded, a wild rhythm she couldn’t control.
“You’re back for the summer?” he asked, breaking the silence, though his tone suggested he already knew the answer.
“Yeah, just a break from the city grind,” she replied, her voice softer than intended. She tucked a strand of hair behind her ear, acutely aware of how close he stood. Too close. “What about you? Still saving the world one fire at a time?”
He chuckled, a deep sound that vibrated through her. “Something like that. Keeps me busy.” His gaze dropped to her lips for a fraction of a second before returning to her eyes, and the intensity there made her knees weak. “You look good, Elise. Different.”
The compliment, simple as it was, set her skin ablaze. “Thanks,” she managed, her cheeks flushing. “You too.” It was an understatement. The way his T-shirt hugged his chest, the faint stubble shadowing his jaw—it was all too much.
For a moment, they just stood there, the hum of the refrigerator and the distant laughter outside the only sounds. Then, as if drawn by an invisible force, Nathan stepped closer, his hand brushing her arm. “I’ve missed seeing you around,” he said, his voice dropping to a husky whisper.
Her breath hitched. “I’ve missed you too,” she admitted, the words slipping out before she could stop them. The admission hung between them, heavy with years of unspoken longing. She should’ve stepped back, should’ve laughed it off, but instead, she tilted her head up, meeting his gaze head-on.
That was all the invitation he needed. In one swift motion, Nathan closed the distance, pinning her gently against the counter. His hands gripped the edge on either side of her, caging her in, and his lips crashed into hers. The kiss was urgent, tasting of barbecue sauce and forbidden desire, and Elise melted into it, her hands sliding up his chest. His heartbeat thundered under her palms, matching her own frantic pulse.
Her fingers tangled in his hair as the kiss deepened, a hungry edge to it that spoke of years of pent-up tension. Nathan groaned softly, one hand leaving the counter to cup her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. The other slid to her waist, pulling her flush against him, and she felt the hard planes of his body through the thin fabric of her dress. Heat pooled low in her belly, and she arched into him, a soft moan escaping her lips.
His mouth trailed to her neck, nipping and sucking at the sensitive skin just below her ear, and she gasped, her nails digging into his shoulders. “Nathan,” she whispered, half-protest, half-plea, but he silenced her with another kiss, this one slower, more deliberate. His hand roamed down her side, skimming the curve of her hip, and she pressed herself closer, needing more of him.
The counter dug into her back as he shifted, his thigh slipping between hers. The friction sent a jolt through her, and she rocked against him instinctively, her dress riding up slightly. His breath was hot against her ear as he murmured, “God, Elise, you have no idea how long I’ve wanted this.” His hand slid under the hem of her dress, fingers grazing the bare skin of her thigh, and she trembled, desire overriding every rational thought.
She reached for his belt, fumbling with the buckle, her movements clumsy with need. Nathan caught her wrist, guiding her hand to his chest instead, his eyes dark with restraint. “Not here,” he rasped, though his body betrayed his words, pressing harder against her. “Not like this.”
But the pull was too strong. Elise tugged him back, kissing him fiercely, and he relented, his hands roaming with renewed urgency. They ground against each other, the counter’s edge biting into her as she wrapped a leg around his hip. The fabric of his jeans rubbed against her through her panties, a delicious pressure that made her head spin. His hands gripped her hips, guiding her movements, and she felt the tension building, a wildfire threatening to consume them both.
“Elise, we can’t—” he started, but she silenced him with a nip to his lower lip, her fingers digging into his back. The risk, the thrill of being caught, only fueled her desire. She could hear Liam’s voice outside, calling for Nathan, but it was a distant echo, drowned out by the pounding of her heart and the heat of Nathan’s body against hers.
His hand slipped higher, brushing the edge of her underwear, and she gasped, her body arching into his touch. The sensation was electric, a promise of more, and she clung to him, lost in the moment. They moved together, a frantic rhythm that pushed her closer to the edge, her breaths coming in short, desperate bursts.
Just as the tension peaked, a sharp knock sounded at the door. “Nathan, you in there?” Liam’s voice cut through the haze, and they froze, chests heaving. Nathan pulled back, his eyes wide with panic, and Elise scrambled to smooth her dress, her face burning.
“Yeah, coming!” Nathan called, his voice rough. He grabbed the sauce bottle, shooting her a look of mingled regret and longing before slipping out the door. Elise leaned against the counter, her legs shaky, the taste of him still on her lips.
She took a moment to compose herself, splashing cold water on her face and willing her racing heart to slow. When she rejoined the party, Nathan was back at the grill, laughing with Liam as if nothing had happened. But every time their eyes met across the yard, the memory of that kitchen encounter burned between them—a spark that threatened to ignite into something neither could control.
As the night wore on, Elise couldn’t shake the feeling that this was only the beginning. The forbidden thrill of Nathan’s touch lingered, a secret she’d carry into every glance, every brush of their hands. And deep down, she knew she wanted more—more of him, more of the danger, more of the fire that had just begun to smolder.
