The Spark

“They lit the match. I became the fire.”

The sky was too quiet for a kingdom built on blood.

From the highest tower of the Citadel, the city of Caerlyn looked almost… innocent. Its white stones shimmered in the early sun, and its banners danced with grace. A lie, she thought, a lie dressed in silk.

She stood alone, her figure wrapped in black from collar to heel, like mourning had taken human form. The velvet gloves on her hands were not for warmth, and the mask across her eyes wasn’t for disguise—it was for war. It was her armor. Her warning.

They thought she was gone. Disgraced. Dead, even.

But ashes don’t disappear. They wait. And when the time is right, they rise again.

She stepped forward.

Every heel-click echoed like thunder in the hollow halls of the palace. Her presence split the silence in two. Servants froze. Guards looked away. None dared to speak after what happened the last time someone did.

Her name was no longer whispered. It was feared. Feared, because she wasn’t the girl they had betrayed years ago. That girl had cried. That girl had begged.

This woman?

This woman burned.

And today was only the beginning.

The throne room hadn’t changed. Still lined with obsidian pillars. Still echoing with the hollow lies of power. But to her, everything felt different now.

Because this time, she wasn’t the one kneeling.

The twin doors groaned as she pushed them open. Light flooded in, revealing a gathering of nobles cloaked in silk and sin. They turned, eyes narrowing, lips twisting in recognition—or was it fear?

Good.

Let them fear.

At the far end, slouched across a throne carved of bone and steel, sat Lord Maerin—the man who once called her his greatest weapon. The same man who’d left her to die in the borderlands, calling her sacrifice necessary for the kingdom’s survival.

Her fingers curled tighter around her staff. The glow at its top pulsed in rhythm with her fury.

“I didn’t come here to beg,” she said, her voice calm and cutting as a blade unsheathed.

“I came to conquer.”

Gasps stirred like wind through a dying forest.

“You should be dead,” Maerin hissed, rising to his feet. “You were left for—”

“I was left,” she interrupted. “By cowards. By traitors. By you.”

Each word struck like a lash.

“But you made one mistake, Maerin,” she continued, stepping closer, the blue glow of her staff casting shadows against the marble. “You taught me too well.”

She didn’t need armies.

Not yet.

She only needed their attention—and now she had it.

Because revolution didn’t begin with legions.

It began with a woman who had nothing left to lose.

Maerin descended the steps of his throne with calculated grace, the clink of his armor echoing like a war drum. But she didn’t flinch. Not this time.

“I raised you,” he said, his voice a low thunder. Taught you everything. You owe me—”

“You raised a weapon,” she snapped. “But I forged myself into a storm.”

The nobles whispered again, unease rippling through the room like a tremor before an earthquake. Some looked to the guards. Others just watched—frozen, captivated by the defiance burning in her stance.

One step.

Two.

She walked straight past the crimson carpet that had once soaked in the blood of her brothers. Past the columns where heads had once hung. Every step she took was a rebellion carved in silence.

Maerin reached for the sword at his side.

She didn’t blink.

The staff in her hand surged to life, lightning flickering through the veins of its crystal core. It cast a halo over her face, but her expression was carved from obsidian.

“You think you can walk in here and claim my throne?” he growled.

“I don’t want your throne,” she said.

She raised the staff.

“I want your empire to crumble.”

In a burst of light, the room exploded into chaos.

Her staff struck the marble floor, cracking it like ice under fire. The force flung the front guards back, smashing them into the pillars. Dust rained from the ceiling. Magic—wild, ancient, and wrathful—rushed like a storm into the heart of the court.

Screams erupted. Nobles scattered.

But Maerin didn’t run.

And neither did she.

Their eyes locked—student and master, past and vengeance.

“Call your army,” she dared him, walking through the smoke and chaos. “I’ll burn it down.”

Chapter 1 ends in fire, fury, and the promise of war.
