The smile that never fades
Once, there lived an old man named Martin Luther. He was a very kind man, and everyone in the town liked him. He gave wise advice, treated everyone with love, and cared for people like they were his own children. He never wished for anyone's downfall; instead, he helped those in need.
But whenever people saw him, they couldn’t help but shed a tear, knowing he wouldn’t be around for long. Martin had cancer and had been fighting it for a long time. Despite his illness, he had a unique trait that everyone adored—his smile. His smile could brighten the darkest hearts or comfort those going through tough times.
Martin never worried about his cancer. He was proud of himself for not wasting his life being stressed or sad. Instead, he lived happily and always brought a smile to others' faces.
One day, a boy approached Martin and asked, “Sir, would you mind if I asked you a question?”
Martin smiled and replied, “Of course, my child. What would you like to ask?”
The boy said, “Sir, how do you stay happy and smiling all the time? I want to know your secret, especially in a world where we face difficulties all the time.”
Martin’s smile grew wider. He said, “Ah, let me tell you something. My father was an alcoholic. He used to beat my mother and me, and I was very sad because of his behavior. But one day, my father said something that touched my heart. He told me, ‘My child, I wasn’t always like this. I used to be a happy and caring man. But when I lost my job, everything changed. I started treating people badly and became an alcoholic. But remember, no matter how hard life gets, you should always be kind to others. When you die, it’s the people around your grave that show how you lived your life.’
“When my father said this, I understood the importance of treating people with respect. But the saddest part was that when my father died, no one was at his funeral except for my mother and me. That day, I promised myself I would live differently. When my cancer struck, I remembered his words and chose to move on with a smile.”
The boy, touched by Martin’s story, said, “Sir, I am grateful. You’ve taught me an important lesson. Thank you.”
When Martin passed away due to cancer, the boy attended his funeral. To his surprise, there were millions of people there. The crowd was so vast that it took him 5 hours to catch a small glimpse of the gravestone.
On the gravestone, it was written:
“Respect for others is the foundation of his character.”
The boy was so inspired by Martin’s life that he wrote a story titled A Smile That Never Fades to honor his existence.
