Chapter 1: The Beginning of the End

Chapter 1: Michael Reyes stood at the edge of the university courtyard, his heart heavy with a sense of insignificance. The breeze was cool, whispering through the towering buildings of Hartwood University, yet Michael felt no warmth from the surrounding campus life. To the rich students, he was just another face in the crowd—forgotten the moment they turned their gaze.

He adjusted the worn-out backpack slung over his shoulder and tried to ignore the whispers and laughter that followed him wherever he went. His classmates, dressed in designer clothes and wearing their confidence like a second skin, took little notice of the boy who sat alone in the back of every class, who never fit in no matter how hard he tried.

"Hey, poor kid, better not touch the fancy cars on the lot!" someone shouted, the laughter that followed like an echo of a cruel truth he had long been forced to accept.

Michael clenched his fists, his nails biting into his palms. He had been living this life for years—suffering in silence, always the outsider, always invisible. Yet, today felt different. Today, something was coming.

As he walked down the path toward his next class, a small, unremarkable pawn shop caught his eye. The windows were dusty, the door creaked as if it hadn't been opened in ages, but there was something about it that drew him in.

He pushed the door open. The bell above chimed softly, and the musty smell of old leather and forgotten things filled his nostrils. Behind the counter sat a frail old man, his hands wrinkled from years of handling objects that had long since lost their value to the world.

"Can I help you, boy?" the man croaked, not looking up from the small object he was polishing.

"I—I just wanted to look around," Michael muttered, feeling out of place, unsure of why he had walked in.

The shop was filled with odds and ends: dusty books, tarnished jewelry, and antiques that spoke of forgotten stories. But something caught his eye. On a cluttered shelf in the corner, resting beneath a flickering light, lay a small, intricate watch. The watch was unlike anything Michael had ever seen. It was old, but the craftsmanship was stunning. The silver gleamed faintly, as though the watch had a life of its own, calling to him.

"How much for this one?" Michael asked, his voice barely a whisper.

The old man finally looked up, his eyes narrowing as he examined the watch. "That one? Not for sale."

Michael frowned. "Why not?"

The old man’s lips curled into a strange smile. "Some things… aren’t meant to be sold, boy. But you look like you need it."

With a confused expression, Michael reached for the watch, its cool metal sending a strange shiver down his spine. As his fingers brushed the surface, he felt a sudden jolt, as though the watch was alive, pulsating with energy.

"Take it," the man said, his voice barely audible now. "But remember, everything comes at a price."

Before Michael could ask any more questions, the man turned away, returning to his task of polishing the forgotten trinket in his hands.

Michael, heart racing, left the shop with the watch in hand. As soon as he stepped out into the sunlight, the world around him seemed different—warmer, brighter, yet tinged with an eerie feeling that something had shifted.

That night, as Michael sat alone in his cramped dorm room, he examined the watch. His fingers traced the engraved symbols on its surface, the words unfamiliar, yet oddly comforting. He didn’t know why, but he felt compelled to put it on.

The moment the watch clasped around his wrist, a sharp pain shot through his chest. The room seemed to spin, and for a brief moment, Michael felt as if he were being pulled into another world. His vision blurred, and a voice—deep, haunting—whispered in his ear.

"Your first task awaits, Michael. Complete it… or suffer the consequences."

The room went silent. The pain faded. And suddenly, Michael understood that his life was no longer his own. He had become part of something far greater, far more dangerous, than he could have ever imagined.

And so, it began.
