Chapter 1

SAMANTHA

My tired feet shuffled along the bustling city streets as I made my way to my third job of the day. The weight of my responsibility pressed heavily on my shoulders just like the memories of my troubled past. I had lost my mother at a young age, and my father, who was never in the picture, had left me to fend for myself with nothing.

"You have before the end of this year to pay up your father's loans else I'll trade you off," the loan collector had threatened, pointing his baseball baton at me.

This wasn't the first time I would be threatened by different loan collectors. My despicable and drunk father had died early last year and left a huge amount of debt for me to clear. I had to drop out of high school, and I had to take on three jobs to make ends meet, but it was impossible to clear up those outrageous amounts of money he owed.

The sun began to set, casting an orange glow over the horizon as I entered the grocery store where I worked part-time. I greeted the co-workers warmly with a smile, always willing to brighten their day despite the exhaustion that weighed me down. I began work immediately, tirelessly stocking shelves, scanning items at the checkout, and cleaning up spills, all to make ends meet.

One certain evening, while I stocked the shelves, I overheard a conversation between two elderly customers. They were discussing a job opportunity for a housekeeper, with rumours of a substantial salary attached. My ears perked up at the mention of such an opportunity. My mind raced with thoughts of a brighter future where I could finally escape the cycle of long hours and overwhelming debts.

Curiosity got the best part of me and I couldn't resist the striking urge to have a conversation with this woman. One of them seemed to have insider information about the job, her name was Mrs. Dickinson, a friendly woman with a wealth of stories and wisdom in her eyes. She was a regular at the store so talking to her was easy for me.

I approached her with a hesitant but hopeful smile. "Excuse me, Mrs. Dickinson," I began. "I couldn't help but overhear you talking about a housekeeping job with a good salary. Do you happen to have more details about the job?"

Mrs. Dickinson turned to me, her face wrinkling into a smile. "Why, hello there, dear. Yes, I do have some information. You see, my friend works as a housekeeper there and she needs assistance with the job. Word has it that the pay is quite generous."

My heart raced with anticipation. This could be my ticket to a better life, I thought. A chance to leave behind the constant struggle of working multiple jobs   I eagerly leaned in closer, hoping to gather as much information as possible.

"Is there any way I can get in touch with the lady who is hiring?" I asked, trying to hide my excitement.

Mrs. Dickinson nodded and rummaged through her purse, pulling out a small notepad and a pen. "Of course dear, I can give you her contact information. But remember this, child, it's not just about the money. Being a housekeeper is hard work and you'll need to prove your worth. Are you up for the challenge?"

My eyes sparkled with determination. I have faced countless challenges in my life and have never backed down. This would be no different.

I thanked Mrs. Dickinson profusely and scribbled down the contact details, promising to follow up on the opportunity.

As I left the grocery store that evening, a renewed sense of hope filled my heart. The prospect of a well-paying job as a housekeeper held the promise of stability, security, and perhaps even a chance to find love and happiness. With my head held high, I took a deep breath and made my silent vow to seize this opportunity, ready to embark on a new chapter of my life.

Over the next few days, I prepared myself meticulously for the interview. I researched everything I could about housekeeping, from cleaning techniques to organizing skills, wanting to be well-informed and prepared for the task that might be thrown my way. I polished my resume, and though it wasn't fitting enough for such a role, I highlighted my experience in the grocery store.

Finally, the day of the interview came, I dressed up in my best attire, a simple yet elegant outfit that exuded professionalism and confidence. I arrived at the venue and I was shocked to the bones. Mrs. Dickinson had failed to mention that it was a grand mansion, it was exquisite and was the best I had seen so far. It was a hubby to always check out beautiful mansions in the city, giving me the hope that one day I would own something like that but this mansion right here superseded the ones I had seen.

I held my breath as I walked through the towering front door. I was greeted by an elegant woman in her fifties, Mrs. Thompson, the lady who was the head housekeeper and friend to Mrs. Dickinson. My nerves threatened to overwhelm me, but I reminded myself to remain composed and present my best self.

Mrs. Thompson led me through the opulent halls, each room more breathtaking than the last. Seated in the lavish study, she began the interview. "Who are you, young lady?" she asked.

"My name is Samantha Miller, ma'am. I..."

"Oh, you must be the one Mrs Dickinson talked to me about," she interrupted; a warm smile was seen on her face. "Nice to meet you, my dear. My friend recommended you for this job."

My eyes widened in amazement; I had no idea what she was talking about; all I did was have a harmless conversation with Mrs. Dickinson. I never knew she would pull the strings for me.

"Regardless of my friend's recommendation, it's only fair that we have this interview. Shall we begin the interview?" she asked.

"Of course, I'm ready," I said with so much enthusiasm.

I listened intently as Mrs. Thompson outlined the responsibilities of the position. The job entailed not only cleaning and organizing but also assisting in overseeing household affairs, managing schedules, and occasionally assisting with hosting events. I absorbed every detail, nodding to show her my understanding and enthusiasm.

As the interview progressed, I could tell that Mrs. Thompson was impressed by my genuine passion for the role. "Tell me about your background," she asked.

I shared snippets of my story, and my journey from being an orphan to working multiple jobs, all the while striving to make ends meet. Mrs. Thompson's eyes softened with empathy, recognizing the determination and resilience that radiated from my words. This wasn't just my imagination, I could tell from her expression that she understood my plight.

After what felt like an eternity, the interview came to a close. I left the mansion with a mix of emotions, unable to predict the outcome but hopeful for a positive outcome.
