Prologue

The humid Philippine air clung to Natalie Dostoevsky like a second skin as she walked through the bustling corridors of the old hospital. It was a world away from the crisp, clinical atmosphere of the London hospitals she’d left behind, a world of vibrant chaos that both thrilled and overwhelmed her.

Natalie had traded the familiar comforts of home for the intoxicating freedom of the Philippines. She’d left behind the stifling expectations of her family, the whispers of ambition, the pressure to follow in her father’s footsteps as a neurosurgeon.  In this island paradise, she’d chosen to start anew, to embrace a simpler life as a neurologist, to bury her past as a skilled surgeon and focus on the complexities of the human mind.

Her heart belonged to her four younger sisters: Elizabeth, Cloud, Lavender, and Thanata. They were her world, her source of joy, their love a constant comfort that outweighed any romantic desire.  She had always believed that their love was enough, that she wouldn’t need the complications of a romantic entanglement.

But as she navigated the labyrinthine halls of the old hospital, her steps echoing through the dusty corridors, she couldn’t shake the feeling that something was about to change.

Her gaze fell on a poster promoting a medical conference, the image of a man in a crisp white coat catching her attention.  Dr. Christian William Brakes, a renowned neurosurgeon with a disarming smile and eyes that seemed to hold a universe of warmth and compassion.  She was drawn to his presence, the quiet magnetism radiating from the poster.

As she rounded a corner, a sudden collision sent her sprawling.  The clatter of books and the startled gasp of a voice echoed through the hallway.  She looked up to see a tall figure hovering over her, his face etched with concern.  It was Dr. Brakes, his eyes filled with a mixture of amusement and apology.

“I’m so sorry,” he said, his voice a low rumble that sent shivers down her spine.  “I wasn’t paying attention.”

Natalie chuckled, her cheeks flushing with a warmth that had nothing to do with the humid air.  “It’s alright,” she said, rising to her feet, her gaze drawn to his captivating eyes.  “It’s a bit of a maze, this place.”

Dr. Brakes extended a hand, his touch gentle yet firm.  "Welcome to the Philippines, Dra. Dostoevsky," he said, his smile a beacon of warmth in the cool sterile atmosphere.  "It's a place where anything can happen."

And in that moment, as their eyes met, a spark ignited, a connection that transcended their shared profession.  For Natalie, the quiet, self-sufficient world she had built for herself began to tremble, a tremor of something new, something exciting, something that hinted at a life she never thought she wanted.

She couldn’t deny the pull she felt towards this man, a man who seemed to embody everything she had thought she wanted – and everything she believed she didn’t need.
