Chapter 1
The room was quiet—too quiet. Olivia sat by the window, fingers tracing the delicate edges of the lace curtain. Another month, another whisper of disappointment. Outside, the neighborhood children played, their laughter stabbing at her like tiny, invisible needles.
Twelve years of prayers, doctors, and dreams deferred. Her husband, Jake, was kind—at least most days. But even kindness began to stretch thin under the weight of time and expectation. And then there was Melissa, Jake’s mother, who never missed an opportunity to remind Olivia of her "failure."
"A woman’s worth is in her womb," Melissa had hissed more than once, loud enough for Olivia to hear from the kitchen. Each word etched itself into Olivia’s heart like frost on a windowpane.
Still, Olivia remained. Not because she had to, but because something deep within her refused to let go. A quiet strength. A seed of faith no one could see but her.
She remembered the first year, when she and Jake still believed. The second, when the tests began. The fifth, when hope began to feel like a betrayal. And the tenth, when she had to force a smile at yet another baby shower.
Yet on the twelfth year, something changed.
It was the night of the storm. Thunder cracking open the sky, and Olivia on her knees, soaked in prayer more than tears. That night, she dreamed—no, she felt—two tiny heartbeats fluttering in her soul.
And that’s where the story begins—not with the birth of children, but with the rebirth of hope.
