Prologue
Prologue
The city of New York glittered beneath a veil of darkness, its towering skyline reaching for the heavens like the fingers of a giant, as though trying to grasp at the stars. Victoria Keynes stood by the window of her high-rise apartment, the soft hum of the city below offering no comfort, no distraction from the shadows that had haunted her for years.
How did I get here? She wondered, her reflection staring back at her through the glass. The woman in the mirror was a stranger—elegant, composed, and calm on the outside, but beneath the surface, her heart raced with a whirlwind of emotions. Fear. Guilt. Desire.
She pressed her hand to the cold glass, her mind drifting to the night that had changed everything—the night she had met him.
Spencer Hernandez.
Her heart gave a sharp pang at the thought of him. He was danger wrapped in temptation, a man who exuded power and mystery, whose presence had left her breathless from the moment their eyes had met. She had been drawn to him like a moth to a flame, even knowing she would be burned.
But she hadn’t expected the depth of the fire. She hadn’t anticipated the way her life would spiral out of control, the way her past would collide violently with her present, or the secrets that would unravel, exposing her deepest fears and desires.
And now here she was, standing on the precipice of a future she couldn’t quite grasp, her heart torn between what was right and what she couldn’t resist. The lawyer in her knew better—knew the risks. Spencer wasn’t just any man; he was the leader of a dangerous empire, a world she had no business being a part of.
But it was too late. She was already too far gone.
The soft vibration of her phone on the counter pulled her from her thoughts. She hesitated before glancing at the screen.
It was a message from Spencer.
I’m outside.
Her pulse quickened as she stared at the words, her fingers trembling slightly as she set the phone down. The shadows seemed to grow darker around her, suffocating, yet the pull toward him was undeniable.
What she didn’t know was that this moment would mark the beginning of something much bigger than either of them could have anticipated. A storm was coming, and Victoria was standing in its path, unaware of just how far she would fall, how much she would lose, and how deeply she would love.
With a heavy heart and a mind clouded by uncertainty, she reached for the door.
Because despite everything, she knew one thing for certain:
There was no turning back now.
