Characters That Make You Want to Keep Reading
"What pulled me into Whispers in the Hallway most was the character dynamic. Cole feels vulnerable without being weak, while Raelle immediately stands out as someone complicated, guarded, and difficult to predict. Their early interactions have real tension, and I liked that their connection doesn’t feel instantly easy or comfortable. The story also does a good job of creating the atmosphere of a high school where everyone seems to know more than the new boy does. Friendships, popularity, old wounds, jealousy, and secrets are introduced quickly, so there is always a reason to keep reading and wonder what happened before Cole arrived. Raelle is probably the character I found most interesting. At first she can seem almost cruel, but there are enough small hints that her attitude comes from something deeper. Zeke also adds an important softer side to the group, and the relationships between the characters feel like they have history rather than existing only for the romance. There are a few places where the grammar or wording could use another editing pass, and occasionally some information is explained a little too directly. But the characters, emotional tension, and developing mystery easily kept my attention. A very promising YA drama with romance, secrets, messy friendships, and characters who clearly have much more beneath the surface. I’m curious to see where Cole and Raelle’s relationship goes and what else these hallways are hiding."
Got to know when to stop
"This isn't my normal genre but I was sucked in by the plot. The characters were strong, well set up, developed to a point that a teenager would be. The story tells a familiar bullying tale of high school hijinks, with a more serious tone settling in before long. The main villain meets their end in a non typical way, I was expecting a few more chapters to end the tale but apparently that isn't the authors intent. Now we get a new possible villain / love interest for one of the main characters which seems forced to me. I would have expected this new twist to be in the second book. I'll leave this for 6 months, see what happens when it inevitably ends. I'll update the review once I finish it. "
