Chapter 1. The day everything changed
The sun hung low in the sky, a smoldering ember casting a pallid
glow over the crumbling city of Eldrath. Valla stood at the edge of
a dilapidated rooftop, her dark purple hair whipping in the wind
like a banner of rebellion. Below her, the streets were a chaotic
tapestry of shadows and despair, where the remnants of
humanity scuttled between the ruins of what had once been a
thriving metropolis. Today was her sixteenth birthday, a day that
had once promised cake and laughter, but now loomed like a
storm cloud over her head.
“Valla, you should come down,” Sigyn urged, her voice a low
growl that echoed softly against the concrete. The dire wolf’s
sleek black fur glimmered with an otherworldly sheen, her violet
eyes piercing through the haze of the late afternoon. Valla turned
to her familiar, the bond between them palpable, forged in years
of shared secrets and quiet companionship.
“I can’t, Sigyn. Not yet,” Valla replied, her tone steady, though
uncertainty gnawed at her insides. She felt the weight of the
world pressing down on her, the oppressive atmosphere of
Eldrath suffocating any flicker of hope.
Today marked more thanjust her birthday; it was the day she would either embrace her
destiny or be consumed by it.
The Council of Elders had made it clear that turning sixteen
meant she would be evaluated, her powers measured against the
stringent expectations of the Dominion. As a witch, Valla had
always known she was different, her abilities more potent and
unpredictable than those of her peers. But with power cameresponsibility, and the Council was unforgiving. They demanded
loyalty, obedience, and above all, conformity.
“Look at them,” Sigyn said, her gaze sweeping over the streets
below. “They’re scared, Valla. They’re always scared. You can’t
let them dictate who you are.”
Valla clenched her fists, the familiar surge of energy crackling
through her veins. “I know, but what choice do I have? If I refuse
to comply, they’ll—”
“They’ll what? Kill you?” Sigyn interrupted, her voice rising in
indignation. “They’ve done that to countless others who dared to
defy them. You’re stronger than they think. You can’t let fear
control you.”
Valla took a deep breath, drawing strength from her familiar’s
unwavering belief. “You’re right,” she said, her voice steadier now.
“But I have to be smart about this. I can’t just… explode into
chaos. Not yet.”
The wind howled around them, carrying with it the distant sounds
of the city—a siren’s wail, the crack of a distant explosion, the
murmurs of the oppressed. Valla’s heart ached for the people
below, those who had lost everything to the iron fist of the
Dominion. She had watched friends and neighbors vanish, taken
by the Council for reasons that were never clear. Each
disappearance was a reminder of the stakes, a warning of what
could happen if she didn’t tread carefully.
“Valla,” a voice called from the shadows, pulling her from her
thoughts. She turned to see Malek emerging from the stairwell, his black hair tousled and dark grey eyes glinting with mischief.
He was a necromancer, a master of the dead, and his presence
added an electric charge to the air. “You’re not going to jump, are
you?”
“Of course not,” she replied, rolling her eyes, though a smile
tugged at her lips. “I’m just contemplating my life choices.”
Malek stepped closer, his demeanor shifting from playful to
serious. “You know they’ll be watching you today. The Council will
want to see how you’ve grown, what you can do. You need to be
prepared.”
“I know,” Valla said, her heart racing at the thought. “But what if
they don’t see me for who I am? What if they only see a threat?”
Malek crossed his arms, his expression softening. “Then show
them they should be afraid. You have power, Valla. You can bend
the very fabric of reality if you want to. Don’t let them intimidate
you.”
The tension in the air thickened, and Valla felt the weight of his
words settle over her like a cloak. She had spent years honing her
abilities, learning to control the wild magic that surged within her.
But the Council’s expectations loomed over her like a dark cloud,
threatening to swallow her whole.
“Let’s go,” Malek said, breaking the silence. “We can’t keep them
waiting.”
Valla nodded, steeling herself for what lay ahead. As they
descended the stairwell, Sigyn padded silently beside her, areassuring presence in the chaos. The narrow corridor was dimly
lit, the flickering lights casting ominous shadows that danced
along the walls. Valla’s heart raced with every step, anticipation
and dread swirling within her.
Emerging from the building, they stepped into the heart of
Eldrath, where the Council’s headquarters loomed like a fortress.
Its cold, stone façade was a stark reminder of the power that
resided within, a power that had been wielded against so many.
The streets were eerily quiet, the usual bustle of life replaced by
an oppressive stillness. Valla could feel the eyes of the Council
upon her, watching, waiting.
“Stay close,” Malek whispered, his voice barely audible above the
rustle of the wind. Valla nodded, her heart pounding as they
approached the grand entrance. The heavy doors swung open,
revealing a vast chamber filled with the Council members, their
faces etched with authority and disdain.
“Welcome, Valla,” one of the Elders intoned, his voice echoing
through the chamber. “Today, we assess your abilities and
determine your place within the Dominion.”
Valla took a deep breath, forcing herself to meet their gazes. “I’m
ready,” she declared, her voice firm despite the tremor in her
hands. The Council exchanged glances, their expressions
inscrutable, but she refused to back down. This was her moment,
and she would seize it.
As the Elders began their evaluations, Valla felt the weight of their
judgment pressing down on her. They called forth her powers,
demanding she demonstrate her skills, her control over theelements, her connection to the arcane. Each test pushed her to
her limits, but with every challenge, she felt the surge of energy
within her grow stronger.
Yet, as the final test approached, a flicker of doubt crept into her
mind. What if she failed? What if they deemed her too powerful,
too dangerous? The thought sent a shiver down her spine, but
she quickly banished it. She had come too far to let fear dictate
her fate.
“Show us your true potential, Valla,” the Elder commanded, his
voice a low rumble that echoed through the chamber. “Unleash
your power.”
Valla closed her eyes, feeling the energy swirl around her, a
tempest of magic waiting to be unleashed. She drew upon the
depths of her being, channeling her strength into a single point of
focus. The air crackled with electricity as she opened her eyes,
her silver-blue gaze locking onto the Elders.
In that moment, she felt invincible. The magic surged through her
veins like wildfire, and she released it in a brilliant explosion of
light and energy. The chamber erupted in chaos as the Elders
stumbled back, shock and fear etched on their faces. Valla had
shown them her true self, and for the first time, she felt the thrill
of power coursing through her.
But as the dust settled and the echoes of her magic faded, she
realized the cost of her display. The Council’s expressions shifted
from shock to something darker—fear mingled with rage. Valla’s
heart sank as she understood the implications of what she had
done.“Enough!” the Elder bellowed, his voice cutting through the
tension like a blade. “You’ve proven your power, but with it comes
responsibility. You are a threat to the Dominion, and we cannot
allow you to roam free.”
Panic surged within her as the reality of her situation sank in. She
had thought she could control her destiny, but now it felt as
though the very ground had been pulled from beneath her. The
Council had seen her as a weapon, a force to be contained rather
than a person to be nurtured.
“Valla, run!” Malek shouted, his voice breaking through the
chaos.
In that instant, everything shifted. The room erupted into chaos
as Valla’s instincts kicked in. She turned on her heel, sprinting
toward the exit, her heart pounding in her chest. The sound of
footsteps echoed behind her, the Council’s guards closing in, and
the weight of her choices bore down upon her.
“Sigyn, we need to go!” she cried, her voice strained with
urgency.
The dire wolf was at her side in an instant, her eyes fierce and
determined. Together, they raced through the halls of the
Council’s fortress, dodging guards and weaving through the
chaos of the moment. Valla’s mind raced, plotting their escape as
the walls of the Dominion closed in around her.
As they burst through the doors and into the open air, Valla felt
the weight of her decisions crashing down upon her. She hadunleashed her power, and now there was no turning back. The
world she had known was gone, replaced by a new reality filled
with danger and uncertainty.
But deep within her, a flicker of defiance ignited. She would not
be a pawn in their game. She would survive, no matter the cost.
With Sigyn at her side and Malek’s voice echoing in her mind, she
took her first steps into the unknown, ready to embrace the wild,
chaotic journey that lay ahead
