“The Illuminated Prey”

The frozen night enveloped the Soviet submarine like a suffocating grip. The metal of the vessel creaked faintly under the pressure of the depths. Inside this enclosed shell, Captain Karinesko had his piercing blue eyes fixed on the periscope, observing his illuminated prey. Sweat slowly dripped from his forehead, passing through his blond beard.

“Bearing 0-1-3. Maintain steady course,” he ordered firmly.

“Yes, Captain!” replied the helmsman beside him. Life in submarines was a continuous challenge. The restricted and suffocating environment was the daily reality for the 45 crew members, their only “home” beneath the surface of the sea. The unbearable heat emitted by the engines, the strong smell of fuel and oils, the pervasive humidity, and the sweat from demanding working hours created an atmosphere almost unbearable for anyone.

From the other end of the submarine, the voice of the chief petty officer echoed through the metallic communication tube:

“We’ve fixed the problem, Captain! The torpedoes will be ready shortly.”

This announcement brought a ripple of relief to the crew. It was a sign that, despite the difficulties, they were ready to face the next critical step. “Perfect,” he whispered. The appearance of the enormous illuminated ship seemed like a divine gift. Perhaps there was hope... Perhaps, if he managed to sink a few ships, he could escape the inevitable court-martial.

The main female character reminds me somewhat of myself having to deal with childhood trauma that just leads you down a path of more bad decisions until one day you make a decision that changes everything for the better and it’s hard for to realize that...
