Chapter 1

SAVANNAH

The hum of the city faded into a low, distant murmur outside the floor-to-ceiling windows. Skyscrapers blinked like weary sentinels, their reflections smudged against the glass. Inside, the office was silent except for the soft tap-tap of my fingers racing across my keyboard.

11:43 PM.

Another late night.

I tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear and stretched my legs under my desk. My back ached, my eyes burned, but I refused to stop until the last report was uploaded. I have worked too damn hard to get here executive assistant to Cole Ashford, CEO of Ashford Industries. The youngest, most enigmatic CEO the firm had ever seen.

And my boss. My very off-limits, maddeningly attractive boss.

I exhaled sharply, shaking my head at myself. I needed caffeine, not forbidden fantasies.

The elevator dinged softly.

My heart skipped. No one should be here at this hour except the cleaning crew, and they always come after midnight.

I straightened in my seat just as the doors slid open.

Cole Ashford stepped out, loosening his tie with one hand, a file folder in the other. His jacket was slung over his shoulder, and the faintest smirk tugged at his lips when his eyes locked on me.

Steel blue eyes. Confident. Unreadable. Dangerous.

My mouth went dry.

“Ms. Blake,” he drawled, his voice low, smooth like velvet over steel. “Burning the midnight oil again?”

I stood quickly, smoothing my pencil skirt with clammy palms. “Just finishing the quarterly projections, sir.”

He lifted a brow at the formal address but said nothing. Instead, he walked toward my desk, each step slow and deliberate, the kind that made my stomach tighten with something I refused to name.

“You know,” he said, setting the file down with a casual flick of his wrist, “I pay you well enough to have a life outside these walls.”

I forced a laugh, careful to keep my tone light, professional. “Deadlines don’t care about my social life, Mr. Ashford.”

“Neither do I,” he murmured, eyes glinting.

A beat of silence stretched between us, charged and heavy. My pulse thudded in my ears.

This was bad. So bad.

I knew the rumors everyone did. Cole Ashford wasn’t just a ruthless businessman; he was a man who didn’t mix business with pleasure. Lines were drawn. Boundaries respected.

But standing this close to him, breathing in his faint cologne, dark, woodsy, masculine, made those lines blur.

“You’re dedicated,” he said finally, his gaze lingering a second too long before he turned toward his office. “Almost too dedicated.”

I watched his broad shoulders retreat down the hallway, every inch of him carved in shadows and ambition.

I sank back into my chair, pressing a hand against my racing heart.

Get a grip, Blake.

I bent my head over the keyboard, willing myself to focus, but my hands trembled slightly.

Across the room, Cole’s office door remained cracked open, a sliver of light spilling into the darkened hall.

I should leave. Shut down my computer, gather my things, and walk straight out that door before I did something incredibly stupid.

Instead, I found myself glancing toward his office again.

And that’s when I heard it.

My name.

Soft. Low. Like a secret spoken into the night.

“Savannah.”

I froze, every nerve ending firing at once.

Maybe I imagined it. Maybe exhaustion was playing tricks on me—

“Come here.”

Clear. Commanding.

No mistake this time.

I swallowed hard, nerves and adrenaline tangling into a heady cocktail in my veins.

Standing slowly, I smoothed my skirt once more, heart hammering so loudly I was sure he could hear it echo through the marble floors.

Each step toward his office felt heavier than the last.

When I reached the threshold, Cole was leaning back in his chair, tie loosened, sleeves rolled up, watching me with that same unreadable expression.

“You’ve been working too hard,” he said, voice roughened by something I couldn’t quite place. “Sit.”

He motioned to the chair opposite his desk.

I obeyed before I could overthink it, clutching my hands tightly in my lap.

“I need you focused,” he continued, his gaze sliding over me, slow and thorough. “Sharp. You can’t do that if you’re running on fumes.”

“I’m fine,” I said quickly, almost too quickly.

His lips twitched something close to a smile, but darker. Knowing.

“No,” he said. “You’re not.”

The office suddenly felt too small. Too warm. Too dangerous.

Cole leaned forward, resting his elbows on the desk. “Starting tomorrow, no more late nights unless I request them.”

I stiffened. “Sir, with all due respect—”

“This isn’t a negotiation, Savannah.”

My name rolled off his tongue like silk, a command and a caress all at once.

I inhaled sharply, meeting his gaze and instantly regretting it.

Because in his eyes, I saw it.

The same pull I felt.

The same temptation.

The same danger.

Only now, it wasn’t just simmering under the surface.

It was starting to rise.

And I, Savannah Blake, against every ounce of better judgment I had, was standing at the very edge of a line I wasn’t sure I could keep from crossing.

I dropped my gaze to the polished surface of his desk, struggling to find my voice, to say something that didn’t sound like surrender.

But what was I surrendering to?

The truth?

That my heart race whenever he walked into the room?

That I have memorized the way his jaw tensed when he was deep in thought?

That sometimes, on nights like this, I stayed longer than I needed to… hoping he might still be around?

“I didn’t mean to overstep,” I said quietly, barely above a whisper.

“You didn’t.”

I looked up.

His voice was softer now, stripped of its usual cool edge. His eyes weren’t unreadable anymore. They were focused completely, entirely on me.

Something shifted.

He stood, slowly, walking around the desk until he leaned against the edge just beside me. Too close. Not touching. But enough to tilt my world on its axis.

“You’ve been working nonstop for the past six months,” he said. “You show up early. Stay late. You haven’t used a single personal day.”

“I like my work,” I replied, chin lifted.

“I know. That’s why you’re here.”

I blinked, confused. “What do you mean?”

Cole looked down at me then, his gaze dipping so slowly it made my skin prickle with heat. He wasn’t looking at me like a boss. He wasn’t hiding it anymore.

He was studying me.

Seeing me.

The real me.

And it shook something loose in my chest.

“I’ve had assistants before,” he said finally. “None of them made it past the ninety-day mark.”

I swallowed. “Why?”

“Because I demand too much. I expect more than most people are willing to give. But you… you don’t flinch.”

I didn’t know what to say to that. My hands were clenched tightly in my lap.

Cole reached down and gently uncurled my fingers.

My breath hitched.

The contact was featherlight, brief, barely a whisper of skin, but my entire body lit up like a live wire.

He held my gaze as he stepped back, giving me space. But the mark of that touch lingered, warm and unsettling.

“You’re allowed to rest,” he said softly. “You don’t have to prove anything.”

The words hit deeper than they should have.

Because maybe I was trying to prove something.

To him.

To myself.

To everyone who said I wasn’t cut out for this world.

And yet… sitting here, under the watch of those stormy eyes, I felt more seen than I had in months.

“I’ll go home soon,” I said, my voice a little shaky.

“Good.” He nodded. “I’ll walk you out.”

“You don’t have to—”

“I want to.”

I stood, grabbing my laptop and sliding it into my bag. My heels clicked softly as we made our way down the quiet hallway, side by side in a silence that pulsed with unspoken thoughts.

When we reached the elevator, Cole pressed the button and turned to me again.

“You’ve exceeded every expectation I had,” he said. “But that doesn’t mean you have to carry everything alone.”

I blinked back an unexpected sting in my eyes.

Why did those words feel so personal?

Like he saw past the polished facade I wore at work, past the armor I wrapped around myself.

“I’m used to carrying things alone,” I admitted before I could stop myself.

The elevator dinged. The doors slid open.

We stepped inside.

He didn’t speak.

But his silence didn’t feel like avoidance.

It felt like understanding.

The kind that made my knees weak.

When the elevator reached the lobby, he stepped forward and held the door open for me. I passed him, my shoulder brushing his arm—and it was such a small thing.

But it felt like everything.

I turned to thank him, expecting a quick goodbye. But he didn’t move. He stood there, watching me again with that unreadable expression.

Only now, it wasn’t unreadable at all.

It was clear.

Want.

Unspoken. Unclaimed. But very much there.

“Goodnight, Savannah,” he said, his voice a low rumble.

“Goodnight, Mr. Ashford,” I replied, my voice softer than it had any right to be.

I turned and walked into the night air, my heels echoing against the marble as the glass doors closed behind me.

Only when I reached the curb did I let out the breath I'd been holding.

Whatever just happened between us, it wasn’t just in my head.

And if I wasn’t careful…

It was going to change everything.
