An emotionally raw opening set in a wartorn and dystopian world

"Alpha Wings opens with a heavy, emotionally charged atmosphere that immediately sets it apart from most werewolf stories. Instead of the usual high school or pack politics backdrop, we’re thrown into a war-torn, brutal world where survival is uncertain and kindness is rare. This gritty, dystopian tone is one of the story's greatest strengths — it brings something genuinely fresh and powerful to the genre. The main character’s pain and trauma are vividly portrayed. Her inner turmoil, the visible bruises, the haunted memories, and her efforts to protect a vulnerable child all make for a gripping and heart-wrenching read. The inclusion of compelled shifters and experiments adds an intriguing science-fantasy twist to the usual shifter lore, which really piqued my interest. That said, I did find it a bit challenging to follow the point of view in some places. The narrative maintains first person perspective throughout, but it feels like it shifts characters about halfway through the chapter, and it’s not immediately clear whether this is a change in narrator or a stylistic choice. It was my assumption that the perspective character remains the same young woman, but that wasn't clear to me. Adding a line break, a chapter heading, or a clearer transition would really help readers stay grounded in the story. There are a few spots where grammar and punctuation could be tightened to help the beautiful writing shine even more clearly. A light edit would really elevate what’s already a very strong emotional narrative. Even so, the poetic writing style and emotional weight shine through. With some clarity in transitions and pacing, I think this story has the potential to become something truly memorable. I’m excited to see where it goes from here."
