Chapter 1 - The Flamekeepers
Five years before the sky split open.
The fire crackled, casting golden sparks into the night like tiny stars lifting off into the heavens. They sat in a ragged circle around it, some cross-legged, some lying in the grass, all of them a little too young to be afraid of forever.
Ember knelt closest to the fire. Her name had always been a bit ironic—quiet as moonlight, soft-voiced, never one to stand out. Yet here she was, poking at the glowing logs with a stick, lost in the flames.
“You’re gonna burn your face off,” Theo said, lounging with his head in Rhea’s lap. “And then you’ll have to wear a mask forever and become the town’s mysterious flame witch.”
“I think I’d rather vanish entirely,” Ember murmured.
“Oh no you don’t,” Naomi said, tossing a marshmallow at her from across the fire. “If anyone’s becoming a mysterious forest witch, it’s me.”
Luca chuckled from where he stood, arms folded, leaning against a tree. “We’re already halfway there, honestly. A secret hideout in the woods, group meetings by firelight, strange chants…”
“We don’t do chants,” Marla muttered, sharpening a stick for no reason other than to sharpen it.
“We should,” said Kai, who was scribbling something in his journal. “Chants are underrated. Maybe something with a cool rhythm. Latin, maybe. Or Elvish.”
Benji, the youngest at twelve, poked his head up. “Can we have a group name?”
“We already do,” Jude said from his seat near the logs. He was sketching them in the firelight, his journal filled with crooked smiles and drifting embers. “The Flamekeepers.”
Ember looked up. “That’s… kind of beautiful.”
“I like it,” Silas said softly. He almost never spoke, which made his rare words hang heavier than most. Everyone glanced over, quietly surprised. He didn’t meet their eyes, just kept staring into the fire.
Theo raised his imaginary glass. “To the Flamekeepers, then. Guardians of warmth, light, and overly dramatic names.”
They laughed, and it echoed through the trees.
That night, under a sky full of stars and smoke, they made promises with no idea what they were promising. They said they’d always be there for each other. That no matter what happened, they’d never let the fire go out.
Evershade was the kind of town that stood still when the world spun. No cell towers, one grocery store, and a handful of families who never seemed to leave. The group met over the years like pieces of a slow-moving puzzle.
Luca and Theo were the oldest—both seventeen, both with that kind of charm that came from being a little too confident for their own good. Marla and Naomi followed, bonded by shared loss and survival instincts.
Kai moved to town with his single mother and was instantly labeled “the inventor kid.” He wore goggles unironically and built things that sometimes exploded.
Rhea showed up one winter with bruises she didn’t talk about and a spine made of iron. Benji, her kid brother, was half her size and all curiosity.
Jude had lived in town forever, a quiet kid with paint under his fingernails and poetry in his eyes.
Silas, the last to join, simply appeared at school one day. No one knew much, and he didn’t offer more. Ember noticed him watching the sky like it was trying to tell him something.
And Ember—Ember was the thread. The one they all trusted without needing to say why. She didn’t lead, but somehow they followed. She didn’t shine the brightest, but they turned toward her like warmth.
That night, as the fire burned low and they drifted toward sleep, Ember stayed awake.
She watched her friends lit only by dying flames and starlight. She felt something aching in her chest—not sadness, not yet. Just the weight of everything they didn’t know was coming.
Because sometimes, if you’re very quiet, you can hear the end before it begins.
She looked up at the stars and whispered the promise again, one more time:
We will never let the fire go out.
