In a world shaped by claw and flame, dragons ruled the skies, the sea, the mountains, and the deep places of the earth. Beneath the ground, stone wyrms slithered like forgotten serpents, older than mountains. In the oceans, sirenfolk called with voices sweet enough to lure even dragons to ruin. In the skies, humans rode griffins and wyverns like war-steeds, daring to tame beasts the dragons considered lesser. And within the cities of men, mages bent elements to their will—some strong enough to rival dragonkind.

But even among all this wildness, dragons stood at the top. For they alone could scent the world in ways no other creature could.

To be a dragon was to live by scent.

It was the first language a hatchling learned. The way they knew mother from stranger. The way they found home even after storms or exile. Through scent, dragons felt safety, danger, emotion, even intent. To a dragon, another’s scent was more than recognition. It was memory. Identity. Belonging.

And above all—it was how they found their mate.

No dragon needed to be told. The moment their mate crossed their path, the scent would strike them like lightning, resonate in their bones. There was no mistaking it. No denying it.

Bonded pairs always knew. Always.

This was the world Sovarielle was born into.

Welcome to this story—I’m so glad you’re here.

This tale is deeply personal to me. Like Sovarielle, I live with anosmia, which means I have no sense of smell. I lost it as a teenager, and while the cause of my own condition was far less dramatic than Sovarielle’s, the challenges she faces are rooted in my own experience.

In the real world, losing your sense of smell can be isolating and confusing. It affects everything—taste, danger detection, memory, connection. I often rely more on my sight and sense of touch to navigate situations where scent would normally guide me. Sovarielle, however, learns to adapt through heightened hearing, giving her story a fantasy twist that I hope adds both wonder and weight.

I started Sovarielle’s journey in her teenage years because that’s when my own changed. It felt right to explore what it means to lose something so fundamental at an age when you’re still learning who you are. Sovarielle remembers what life was like before, just as I do—but she’s still young enough to shape a new way of living.

At its heart, this story is about identity, adaptation, and finding strength in unexpected places. I hope that by blending personal truth with fantasy, Sovarielle’s story will resonate with anyone who has ever felt different—and anyone who’s ever had to find a new way forward.
