The Signal

Chapter 1 – The Signal

The summer of 1996 was unusually quiet in Millhaven, a small town where nothing much ever happened. The streets were lined with diners, record stores, and old bookstores, each carrying the scent of nostalgia and forgotten dreams. Jessica Miller had spent her entire life here, yearning for something more—something exciting, something mysterious. She just never expected it to find her first.

It started with a note.

Jessica had just finished her shift at the local diner, The Silver Spoon, where she worked as a waitress. The neon lights flickered outside as she stepped into the cool night air. As she reached for the handlebars of her bicycle, she noticed a small folded paper tucked between the grips.

“Tune in to 96.7 at 11 PM.”

That was it. No name, no explanation. Just a simple request.

Jessica frowned, looking around the empty street. The note sent a small shiver down her spine, but curiosity gnawed at her. 96.7… it sounded familiar, but she couldn’t place it.

She stuffed the note into her pocket and rode home.

At exactly 10:55 PM, Jessica sat cross-legged on her bed, her fingers hovering over the old radio on her nightstand. It had been a gift from her father years ago, a relic of the past with dials that clicked into place. She hadn’t used it in months, maybe even years.

The town had a few local stations—one for country music, another for classic rock—but 96.7? She wasn’t sure she’d ever listened to it.

Taking a deep breath, she turned the dial.

Static.

Jessica frowned and adjusted it again. More static, then a faint crackling sound.

Then, at exactly 11:00 PM, a voice broke through the noise.

“Welcome back, night owls. You’re listening to 96.7, your station for lost souls.”

Jessica’s breath caught. The voice was smooth, deep, with a hint of something nostalgic—something almost familiar.

“Tonight, we bring you a story,” the DJ continued, “a story about a girl who’s searching for something… or maybe someone.”

Jessica’s pulse quickened.

“She doesn’t know it yet, but her life is about to change. Maybe she’s already found the first clue. Maybe she’s listening right now.”

Jessica sat frozen, gripping the edge of her blanket.

This had to be a coincidence. It had to be.

The voice continued, weaving a tale that felt unsettlingly close to her own. It spoke of late nights, unanswered questions, and a town where secrets were buried beneath years of silence.

Jessica didn’t realize she had been holding her breath until the broadcast ended.

“That’s all for tonight, dear listeners. Until next time, keep searching.”

The radio went silent.

Jessica stared at it, her heart pounding. She scrambled for the note in her pocket, reading it again. Who had sent this to her? And more importantly, how did this DJ seem to know about her?

The next morning, Jessica couldn’t shake the feeling that something wasn’t right. She found herself at Millhaven Record & Radio, a tiny shop run by Mr. Harris, the town’s oldest radio technician. The bell above the door jingled as she stepped inside.

The air smelled of dust and vinyl records, and behind the counter sat Mr. Harris, adjusting an old turntable. He looked up, his eyes twinkling behind thick glasses.

“Jessica,” he greeted. “What brings you here?”

She hesitated before placing the note on the counter. “Do you know anything about radio station 96.7?”

The warmth in his eyes faded slightly. He set down his tools and leaned forward. “96.7?” he repeated, almost as if testing the words on his tongue. “Haven’t heard that name in a long time.”

Jessica swallowed. “It was broadcasting last night.”

Mr. Harris studied her carefully, then sighed. “That’s not possible.”

She blinked. “What do you mean?”

He wiped his hands on a rag. “96.7 went off the air a year ago.”

Jessica felt a chill run down her spine. “Then who was talking on it?”

Mr. Harris hesitated before answering, his voice barely above a whisper. “Ethan Walker.”

The name hit Jessica like a shockwave.

Ethan Walker.

She knew that name. Everyone in Millhaven did.

Because Ethan Walker had disappeared in 1995.

Jessica left the shop with more questions than answers.

Ethan Walker had been a college student, just a year older than her, who worked at the local radio station. One night, he simply vanished. No witnesses, no signs of struggle—just gone. Some people believed he ran away, others whispered about darker theories.

But if he had disappeared… who had been speaking on 96.7 last night?

Determined to find out, Jessica turned to the one person who might have answers—Sarah Jennings, her best friend since childhood.

Sarah was waiting for her at The Bean House, the town’s only coffee shop. As soon as Jessica slid into the booth, Sarah raised an eyebrow. “You look like you’ve seen a ghost.”

Jessica hesitated before nodding. “I think I have.”

She explained everything—the note, the radio broadcast, Mr. Harris’s reaction. By the time she finished, Sarah was leaning forward, eyes wide.

“Wait, wait, wait,” she said, holding up a hand. “You’re telling me that you heard Ethan Walker’s voice on the radio? The same Ethan Walker who disappeared last year?”

Jessica nodded.

Sarah exhaled. “That’s… really freaking weird.”

“I know.”

A moment of silence passed before Sarah’s expression changed from shock to excitement. “Okay, we have to investigate this.”

Jessica groaned. “I was afraid you’d say that.”

“Come on, Jess! A ghostly radio broadcast? A missing DJ? This is like something out of a horror movie!”

Jessica sighed, knowing there was no way out of this. “Where do we even start?”

Sarah tapped her chin. “Ethan’s old radio station.”

Jessica stiffened. “You mean the abandoned one?”

Sarah grinned. “Exactly.”

Jessica felt her stomach twist. She had passed the station many times—it had been shut down since Ethan’s disappearance, left to decay on the edge of town. The idea of going inside made her uneasy, but a part of her knew Sarah was right.

If they wanted answers, they had to go to the source.

And so, as the sun dipped below the horizon, Jessica found herself standing in front of the abandoned station of 96.7, staring at the darkened windows and feeling the weight of something unknown pressing down on her.

Somewhere inside, a secret was waiting.

And she was about to uncover it.
