Chapter 1 : The Shy Fox

In a dark forest, a young girl awakened, clad in clothing reminiscent of a farm girl, complete with a wide-brimmed hat. Surrounded by what appeared to be fireflies, she felt a surge of confusion and fear. “Help!” she called out, her voice trembling. As she ventured deeper into the woods, she heard her voice echoing back from the peculiar blue flowers that dotted the landscape.

Curiously, she stepped closer to the flickering lights, only to discover that they were not fireflies at all, but tiny particles of glowing yellow dust. Still bewildered, she suddenly heard a voice calling out in the distance. Intrigued, she followed the sound, which grew louder with each step she took.

Eventually, she stumbled upon a small house, no larger than a doghouse, nestled among the trees. Cautiously, she knocked on the door and waited, her heart racing. To her surprise, when the door opened, she was greeted by a talking fox, its tone distinctly feminine.

“Can I help you?” the fox inquired, tilting its head in curiosity.

“Hey i’m Tanna, I am lost. Can you tell me where I can leave?” the girl asked desperately.

The fox replied, “You are in the Dark Forest.”

“No, I mean I’m lost! I need to find my way home to my village,” the girl insisted, frustration creeping into her voice.

The fox’s ears drooped slightly, and she responded, “I-i am sorry, but I cannot assist you. I have never ventured beyond the confines of the forest.”

Tanna’s heart sank, but she knew she must find another way. Determined to leave, she set off, hoping to find a path back home.

Two minutes into Tanna journey, she spotted a mountain ahead and hurried to see if there was a way through the forest. As she ran, she came across a stampede of talking animals and dwarfs rushing past her, all shouting that the dragon was awake.

Tanna heard a distant roar that sent a chill down her spine. She quickened her pace away from the mountain as the dragon unfurled its massive wings and took flight. You might expect a creature like that to unleash a torrent of fire, but instead, it dove uncontrollably, wreaking havoc wherever it went. As Tanna sprinted into the underbrush, she spotted the fox once more. “Tanna, over here!” it called, urgency lacing its voice.

Without hesitation, Tanna followed the fox to a concealed hole in the ground. As she crawled into the darkness, she whispered, “What’s happening?”

“Just stay quiet!” the fox urged, its eyes wide with fear. They could hear heavy thumps above them, and a tense silence enveloped them as they dared not make a sound. Just when it felt like time had stopped, the cacophony ceased, replaced by the distant flapping of wings that gradually faded away.

The fox and Tanna remained huddled together for what felt like an eternity, hearts racing until they finally found the courage to leave. As they emerged from their hiding spot, Tanna turned to the fox, gratitude shining in her eyes. “Thank you for your help,” she said sincerely. Then, with a furrowed brow, she asked, “But why was that dragon trying to kill us?”

The fox replied, “Someone must have awakened it. That dragon hasn’t been awake for centuries, but now it’s awake, and the forest is in grave danger.”

“I’m sorry this is happening,” Tanna said sympathetically.

“It’s not new to us,” the fox responded, a hint of sadness in her voice. “The forest has been dying slowly for a long time.”

Suddenly, the fox fell silent, a thoughtful expression crossing her face. “You know, I think it would be better if I talked to you like this,” she said. Closing her eyes, the fox began to transform, growing into a young girl with flowing red hair.

“You’re a human!” Tanna exclaimed, astonished.

“No, I’m a fox shapeshifter,” the woman replied, a gentle smile playing on her lips. “I can only take on a fox form, but it’s nice to finally show you who I am.”

“That’s so cool!” Tanna said, her excitement evident.

The woman’s expression shifted, and she continued, “Listen, I need to be honest. I know how to help you leave the forest, but it involves going through the mountain. I didn’t want to put you in danger, which is why I lied before. But ultimately, it’s your choice.”

Tanna considered this carefully; uncertainty swirled in her mind. “I think I’ll risk it,” she finally said, determination rising within her. “Before I go, what’s your name?”

The woman smiled warmly. “My name is Luna. I wish you the best of luck, Tanna.”

As Tanna set off, she looked back at Luna and waved, feeling a mix of hope and adventure in her heart as she embarked on her journey to the mountain.
