Chapter 1: A New Morning
The sun peeked through the curtains, casting a golden glow across Emma’s room. Outside, birds chirped their morning songs, but Emma was already awake, lying still under her cozy blanket. Today was Mother’s Day, and she had a secret plan—something she hoped would make her mom smile more than anything else in the world.
She sat up quietly, clutching her piggy bank. It was small and chipped, but to Emma, it was a treasure chest of possibilities. She had saved every coin she could find—under the couch cushions, in her piggy bank, even a few tucked into her sock drawer. Today, she was going to use it for something special.
Sliding out of bed, Emma tiptoed past her sleeping sister, Lily, who was snoring softly. She moved down the hallway, careful not to wake her parents. The house was quiet except for the faint hum of the refrigerator and the distant sound of traffic outside.
When she reached the kitchen, Emma paused to look around. The room was filled with memories—her mother’s favorite mugs, the old wooden spoon, and the recipe book that sat on the counter, its pages yellowed and worn from years of use.
Emma gently pulled out her favorite chair and climbed onto it, reaching for the recipe book. Her small fingers traced the familiar handwriting on the cover: Grandma’s Recipes. She opened it carefully, eyes wide with curiosity and excitement.
Inside, her mother’s stories and notes danced across the pages. Emma’s eyes settled on her mother’s handwriting next to a page titled Apple Pie. It was a recipe passed down from her great-grandmother, filled with love and tradition.
Emma took a deep breath. Today was the day she would try to make the pie herself. She knew her mom loved baking, but lately, she’d been so busy that Emma hadn’t seen her in the kitchen much. Emma wanted to do something special—something that would tell her how much she loved her.
With a determined smile, Emma grabbed her piggy bank and counted her coins. She would buy the ingredients she needed—apples, flour, sugar—and surprise her mother with a homemade treat.
As she quietly gathered her coins, Emma whispered to herself, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. I hope you like this surprise.”
And with that, Emma set out on her small but heartfelt adventure, unaware that this day would turn into a memory neither of them would ever forget.
