Sexy Cowboy
Savannah
“Damn it.”
I bent over, reaching for the rusty latch on the hood of my beat-up Honda Civic and propped it up. Cars whizzed past on the dirt road without paying me even an ounce of attention, covering me in a layer of dust and grime.
I could feel a pool of sweat gathering between my boobs. The air was thick and humid, and my clothes stuck to me like a second skin. It was hot as balls out here. Welcome to Texas—the hot and sweaty armpit of America.
I got in the driver’s seat and turned the key in the ignition, hoping for a miracle, but the car refused to start. There was an awful grinding sound, and then it sputtered and cut out. I wasn’t going anywhere.
“Julie!” My black lab hopped out of the car with me, tongue flopping out and tail wagging excitedly. She was still a puppy and always had a never ending amount of energy and enthusiasm.
But now looking at her was bittersweet. She was my only connection to home, the last remaining memory I had of it.
I had moved myself cross-country on a whim, ready to leave my family and my shitty ex-boyfriend behind. After everything that had happened, I was desperate for a fresh start. But, why did I choose Texas?
I remembered sitting on my bedroom floor in my small, cockroach-infested apartment balling my eyes out, nestling Julie close to my chest as I looked through old family photos.
Then I remembered that song my mother used to sing. She’d sing at the top of her lungs with a goofy southern accent. The memory of it made me laugh through my tears.
The stars at night
Are big and bright
Deep in the heart of Texas
The prairie sky
Is wide and high
Deep in the heart of Texas
There I sat, singing the song in my head, picturing her dancing in the kitchen with my dad as he spun her around in circles. In that moment as I sat on the floor with my heart broken, the words moved me like they never had before.
The stars at night are big and bright… the prairie sky is wide and high… deep in the heart of Texas…
I looked across my overpriced apartment and out my third-story window to see a fire escape and a dead cactus. In that moment the thought of open skies, twinkling stars, and losing myself in the wild, wild west of Texas sounded like the perfect escape.
Now, stuck on the side of an unknown road with no cell service and a dead car, I was regretting my decision.
I picked up Julie and held her close to my chest as I started trying to wave someone over. I hoped her cuteness would catch someone’s attention.
Several cars still drove past, and I gave them the bird as they glanced back at me in the rearview mirror. Finally an old, green Toyota pickup honked and pulled over behind my car.
“Finally,” I muttered under my breath, taking a step towards the car, then stopped in my tracks as a total hunk stepped out of the driver’s seat. I was struck by his stature. He was well over six feet tall and looked like he could lift my car and chuck it twenty feet without breaking a sweat.
His eyes were as blue as the sky on a sunny summer day, his hair a deep chocolate brown, and his chiseled jaw had just the right amount of scruff.
He had that alluring, cheeky smile that could make any girl swoon. He was the spitting image of your quintessential sexy cowboy–the kind that only exists in movies or romance novelas.
And Texas, apparently.
“Afternoon, ma’am.” He tipped his hat at me and threw me a dangerously delicious smile. “What seems to be the problem?”
He was already digging around in the back of his truck and pulling out a toolbox before I had the chance to answer.
“I–uh, I can’t get the engine to turn over.”
He stopped beside me and towered over me, my eyes level with his shoulders before I was forced to tilt my head up to look at him. He was so close I could smell the hay and freshly mown grass embedded in his clothing.
His voice was sweet as honey and devilishly seductive. The smirk he threw my way made me melt. I knew this boy had the power to talk a girl into almost anything, and he knew it. My pussy knew it, too.
“I’ll take a look if that’s alright with you?” He walked past me and rolled up his sleeves. The top button of his shirt was undone, I watched as he leaned over the engine, getting a peak of his muscular chest.
Damn, I’d never seen a man so fine. I was suddenly very pleased with my decision to move to Texas.
He looked around for a second, then rummaged around in his toolbox. “You live around here, sweetheart?”
He called me sweetheart. The southern charm made me feel gooey inside.
“Um, no–but I’m visiting a friend,” I lied. I didn’t want this stranger taking advantage of me because I was alone. I figured it was better to pretend like someone would miss me if I disappeared, even though in reality no one would.
He raised an eyebrow at me. “Your friend can’t come get you?”
I smiled and gave my phone a little wave. “No service.”
He nodded, then returned his attention to my good-for-nothing truck. I watched as he tipped the wide brim of his hat back slightly and wiped the sweat off his brow.
He shook his head, frustrated. “Ain’t gonna get this started today without a new alternator.” He wiped his oily hands on his jeans and closed the hood. There was a slamming sound, followed by the jangling of tools.
I groaned. Now what do I do?
Julie barked and jumped out of my arms, running over to the sexy cowboy. “Hey, there.” He reached down and gave her a scratch behind the ear and she flopped onto the ground exposing her tummy.
He chuckled and gave her a good rub. “Cute dog,” he said, then straightened up. He threw his toolbox in the back of the truck. “Let’s get your stuff so someone doesn’t steal it. I’ll give you a ride back to town and then you can call your friend and a tow truck.”
I hesitated. He sensed my nervousness and threw a brilliant smile my way. “What, a man can’t help a pretty lady stranded on the side of the road?”
I stayed quiet and bit my lip. “I promise, I don’t bite,” he added with a wink, then opened the back door of my truck and grabbed my backpack. I was both aroused and off-put by his boldness. I hadn’t agreed to let him drive me anywhere.
“Hey–” I started angrily, but he interrupted me.
“This it?” He threw the backpack over his shoulder like it weighed nothing. I was impressed, it had to be 75 lbs. It was a large backpacking pack, and carried all of my priceless possessions.
He walked around to the other side of his truck and opened the passenger seat door and threw in the backpack. I watched his muscles rip as he pulled the door open as wide as it would go, holding it open for me. “Come on, I’ll take you where you need to go.”
I didn’t know what to say. I did need a ride…
I picked up Julie. Well, shit. This was a sticky situation I didn’t know how to get out of. I swallowed and climbed into the truck. I was short, and it had a lift kit. He saw me struggle and placed a hand on my back to help me up.
His hand was large and warm, the pressure on my back firm, and I felt a shiver of pleasure flow through me. I blushed as I felt my blue jean skirt ride up and silently prayed that he hadn’t seen anything.
He waited until I was settled before he closed the door and then hopped in the driver’s seat. I wasn’t used to this kind of chivalry, but I could see myself getting used to it.
This total stranger made me feel like a princess. He was nothing like my ex. I’d known him for maybe 15 minutes, and he already treated me better than Matthew ever had.
I took a deep breath and forced Matthew out of my mind.
The car started moving and we rumbled down the dirt road. “So, where you from?” I clipped my seatbelt and then secured Julie on my lap. She was squirming and yipping excitedly.
“Um… Virginia. Charleston.” And there was my second lie. Charleston was nothing like Detroit.
He pursed his lips, but didn’t say anything. There was a quick pause.
“I’m Ryan. You?”
“Wendy.” Third lie. That was my mother’s name.
He frowned. “What?” I asked, confused by his reaction. He shrugged. “I don’t know, you just don’t seem like a Wendy to me, that’s all.”
What the hell? The gall of this man. Imagine, telling someone their name doesn’t suit them. “Well, that’s rude.”
He shrugged again. “I call it like I see it. You gotta nickname, hun?”
“No, my name is Wendy.” Jackass.
“Hm, well we’ll have to fix that,” he drawled. We drove in silence after that until we hit the nearest gas station and he pulled over. I immediately snatched my phone from my pocket and started checking my phone. Damn. Still no service.
“Want a coke?” Ryan leaned over and reached into his glove compartment, grazing my thigh. I wriggled, feeling hot under my skirt. He dug around a bit and then pulled out some spare change.
“No, I’m fine. Thanks.” I opened the car door and jumped down. “I’m gonna walk around and see if I can get a signal.” He disappeared into the gas station, and I stole a peak at his ass as he walked away.
Shit, he was built. And he looked damn good in those dusty jeans and dirty cowboy boots.
I felt my pussy throb. What the fuck, Savannah. Get your shit together. I did my best to ignore the fact that I was wet for this total stranger and lifted my phone up to the sky. I paced all over the parking lot, desperate for a signal.
Nothing.
“Hey, sweetheart!” Ryan called. I turned around and he offered me a bottle of coke. Why is this man insisting that I have a coke? I just looked at him incredulously.
“It’s hot out. You need something cold to help keep you cooled down. Easy to overheat out here.”
The drink did look refreshing. I saw the cold beads of sweat rolling down the outside of the glass, and suddenly my throat felt dry. I bristled, but grabbed the bottle and took a swig.
He was right. It felt good to have something cold on my throat.
“Just lookin’ out for you darlin’.” He stuck a hand in his pocket and held his coke with the other. He cocked his head at me. “Any signal?”
I shook my head in frustration. “No.”
Ryan took another sip of his coke and nonchalantly looked me up and down with those striking blue eyes. I felt his eyes linger on my legs and my short skirt. Was I crazy, or was he checking me out?
I shifted my weight nervously, suddenly feeling like I was naked. Like he was undressing me with his eyes. He wasn’t ashamed about it, either. His eyes raked over me without a care in the world.
Nah, I’m just seeing things.
He was super cute. It was probably just wishful thinking, but I felt my body react, my nipples hardening beneath my tank top. Today was not the day to forgo a bra. Just my luck.
