Chapter 1

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing a gleaming reception area on the thirty-ninth floor of Wolfe & Maddox. Lily Hart’s heart skipped a beat.

This was it.

The culmination of years of sleepless nights, overcaffeinated study sessions, unpaid internships, and silent prayers whispered in the quiet moments between failure and persistence. She’d made it.

Her heels clicked across the marble floors as she approached the receptionist, a polished woman with a headset tucked neatly into her sleek bun.

“Hi, I’m Lily Hart. I’m supposed to start today—junior associate in the acquisitions division,” she said, keeping her voice calm even though her palms were damp.

The receptionist smiled and typed something into her computer. “Yes, Ms. Hart. Welcome to Wolfe & Maddox. Please have a seat. Someone will be with you shortly.”

Lily nodded, tucking a strand of her wavy brown hair behind her ear, and sat on a pristine leather chair. The office was quiet, but it hummed with the power of ambition. She could feel it in the air—this place didn’t just change careers, it changed lives.

Fifteen minutes later, a tall man in an impeccably tailored navy suit appeared, holding a tablet and scanning the room. “Lily Hart?”

She stood quickly. “Yes.”

“I’m Nathan,” he said briskly. “HR liaison. I’ll show you to your team.”

As they navigated a maze of glass offices and whispered conversations, Lily tried not to stare at the floor-to-ceiling windows that framed the Manhattan skyline. Everything was so… sleek. Efficient. Intimidating.

“You’ll be reporting directly to Mr. Wolfe,” Nathan said.

Lily blinked. “Mr. Wolfe? As in… Alexander Wolfe?”

Nathan didn’t break stride. “Yes.”

She’d known this was one of the most elite firms in the country. She hadn’t expected to report directly to *the* Alexander Wolfe. CEO. Co-founder. Legend. He was known for building the company from the ashes of the recession and for destroying anyone who stood in his way. Some called him a genius. Others used less flattering terms—heartless, ruthless, inhuman. He rarely gave interviews and was even rarer in the office. People speculated he barely spoke unless necessary.

Her stomach twisted. She’d expected a manager. A senior associate. Not him.

They stopped at a glass door with his name stenciled in silver lettering. Nathan knocked once and pushed it open.

“Your new associate is here, sir.”

The man behind the desk didn’t look up right away. He was staring at a tablet, his posture relaxed but impossibly sharp in his charcoal-gray suit. Then, slowly, he raised his eyes.

Lily's breath caught.

Alexander Wolfe was nothing like she expected—and yet exactly as the rumors had painted him. Striking. Cold. Unreadable. His eyes were a piercing gray, stormy and distant, and when they landed on her, she felt as though he could see straight through her carefully chosen outfit and rehearsed confidence, right down to the anxiety bubbling beneath.

“Miss Hart,” he said, his voice low and even. “Welcome.”

“Thank you,” she replied, steadying her voice.

He gestured to a seat without standing. “You’ve come highly recommended. Let’s see if you live up to your reputation.”

There was no warmth in the words. No welcome. Just a challenge.

Nathan left them alone, and silence stretched between them, thick and tense. Alexander studied her for a moment too long, then handed her a folder.

“Your first assignment. Due Friday. If you’re going to work here, you’ll learn quickly that excuses are unacceptable. I expect precision, initiative, and discretion.”

Lily nodded. “Understood.”

He didn’t smile. “Do you?”

She hesitated. “I believe I do, sir.”

Alexander returned his attention to the tablet. “Good. Your office is next door. I don’t tolerate mistakes, Miss Hart. Make sure I never regret hiring you.”

Dismissed.

Lily stood, folder in hand, and left his office with her heart pounding.

Her new office was small but spotless, with a view that made her feel like she was floating above the city. She sat down, took a deep breath, and opened the folder.

The documents inside were complex—corporate contracts, acquisition notes, and due diligence summaries. But she could handle this. She *would* handle this.

She just hadn’t expected to feel so watched. So… unsettled.

All day, she caught glimpses of him. Through the glass. In reflections. Silent, calculating, always watching from his office like a wolf surveying his territory.

It wasn’t until she was leaving, long after most employees had gone home, that she saw him again.

He was in the elevator, alone.

She hesitated, then stepped in beside him.

For a moment, neither spoke. The elevator hummed as it descended. Then, softly, he said, “You stayed late.”

Lily looked at him. “I wanted to do a good job.”

He nodded once, his expression unreadable. “Ambition is admirable. But don’t mistake exhaustion for excellence.”

It was the closest thing to advice—or concern—she thought he might ever offer.

As the doors opened, he stepped out and turned to her with a look that sent a shiver down her spine.

“This job will demand everything from you, Miss Hart. Make sure you know what you’re willing to give.”

And then he was gone, disappearing into the crowd, leaving her standing there with the weight of a warning she didn’t yet understand.

She walked out into the night, heart racing, both exhilarated and uncertain.

Alexander Wolfe was more than a boss. He was a mystery. A storm behind glass.

And something inside her whispered that this story was only just beginning.
