Chapter 1

The basement of Il Corvo Rosso was thick with tension. A single bulb swung above the concrete floor, casting shadows like ghosts. The air smelled of blood, sweat, and leather.

Vittoria Moretti stood with her sleeves rolled up, cigarette burning low between her fingers. Her tailored black suit was immaculate—except for the splash of someone else’s blood on her collar.

Across from her, a man trembled in a chair, his hands zip-tied behind his back. Carlo Ricci. Twenty-four years old, street crew. Dumb enough to skim off the top. Dumb enough to think she wouldn’t find out.

“You know what your problem is, Carlo?” Vittoria’s voice was low, almost gentle. “You mistake kindness for weakness. I give people second chances. I let them eat. I let them breathe. And this,”—she kicked the chair out from under him—“this is how you repay me?”

He didn’t answer. He couldn’t. His lip was split, and his eye was swelling shut.

She crouched next to him. “You’re lucky I’ve got somewhere to be tonight. Or I’d take my time.”

She stood and nodded to Marla, her enforcer. “Handle it. Clean. Quiet.”

Then she lit another cigarette, flicked ash on the floor, and walked out like a storm in heels.

The shift was immediate.

Back upstairs, the air was warm, humming with jazz and the clink of glasses. She walked through Il Corvo’s upper dining room, earning quick nods from men who knew better than to make eye contact.

Her driver, Gio, was already waiting outside. As he opened the door to the black Maserati, she caught her reflection in the tinted window: blood on her shirt. Her hand hovered over it, then she sighed.

“Take me to Carmella’s. Now.”

By the time they pulled up to the restaurant in SoHo, she’d changed into a charcoal wool coat, her black slacks sharp as a blade. The blood was gone. Her hair was slicked back, lipstick dark and deliberate.

Inside Carmella’s, it was another world—small tables lit by candles, warm wood walls, slow Italian music curling through the air.

And there she was.

Nicolette Reyes.

Sitting in a corner booth, stirring her glass of wine with her finger like she was bored but waiting for someone worth it. She wore a silky navy dress with a high slit, legs crossed, lipstick the color of crushed roses. Her eyes lit up—not too much—when she saw Vee.

“You’re late,” Nicolette said as Vee slid into the booth across from her.

“I was working,” Vee replied, voice flat.

“Does your work always involve coming to dinner with someone else’s blood on your wrist?”

Vee glanced down. A faint streak of red had escaped cleanup. She wiped it with a linen napkin, then folded it neatly.

“I said I was working.”

Nicolette sipped her wine, letting the silence stretch. “You promised tonight was just us.”

“I am here, aren’t I?” Vee’s voice dropped a note, almost defensive.

Nicolette smiled—but it wasn’t warm. “Physically. I don’t know where your head is.”

Vee didn’t answer. She reached for the bottle of Brunello di Montalcino and poured herself a glass. Her hands were steady. They always were.

They sat in that silence until the waiter came. Nicolette ordered the linguine alle vongole. Vee just asked for whatever red meat they had. She didn’t care. She never did when she was tense.

“So,” Nicolette said, after the waiter left, “are you ever going to tell me what you actually do?”

Vee looked up from her wine glass. “I told you. I run logistics.”

Nicolette laughed—a low, amused sound. “You threatened someone fifteen feet from our apartment last week for selling coke without your permission.”

“That was logistics.”

“Vee. Come on. You think I don’t know who you are?”

Something shifted in Vee’s eyes. For a second, there was vulnerability—like a crack in glass, too small to notice unless you knew where to look.

“I don’t want to bring that side of me into this.”

“And what side is that?” Nicolette asked, her voice softening just a little. “The part of you that walks into a room and scares everyone half to death? Or the part that cooks lasagna from scratch on Tuesdays because you ‘don’t trust the store-bought kind’?”

Vee smirked, sipping her wine. “You like my lasagna.”

“I do. But I also want to know you. Not just the parts you think are safe.”

Vee leaned back in the booth, her posture relaxing just slightly. “I’ve never had to explain myself to anyone.”

“Well,” Nicolette said, her eyes fixed on hers, “get used to it. I’m not scared of you.”

That earned a slow smile. Real. Dangerous. Admiring.

“I know,” Vee said quietly. “That’s what scares me.”

By the time the food came, the tension had melted a bit. Nicolette asked about Vee’s childhood—she answered, vaguely. Catholic school. First fistfight at twelve. Got kicked out of ballet for breaking another girl’s nose.

Nicolette laughed so hard she nearly choked on her pasta.

“You? Ballet?”

“Don’t sound so surprised. I was graceful as hell.”

“You still are,” Nicolette murmured.

They talked more after that. Books Nicolette loved. Old Italian movies Vee hated. The night deepened. At one point, Vee reached across the table and laid her hand over Nicolette’s, thumb brushing her knuckles. Her hands, for all their violence, were warm.

“I’m trying,” Vee said. “To be... someone you can build a life with.”

Nicolette looked at her, quiet for a moment. “Then keep trying.”

Vee nodded. “I will.”

Outside, the city was quieter. Vee walked Nicolette to her cab, both of them lingering by the door.

“You could come up,” Nicolette said, voice low.

Vee kissed her instead—slow, sure, with one hand at the back of Nicolette’s neck, like claiming something precious.

“I’ll see you tomorrow,” Vee murmured. “Early. I promise.”

“For breakfast?”

“Lasagna.”

And just like that, the most dangerous woman in New York disappeared into the dark.

But Nicolette didn’t feel fear.

She felt something else entirely.

Hope.
